  Station Information - Bertel Thorwaldsen
Thorwaldsen's first success was the model for a statue of Jason, which was highly praised by Canova, and he received the commission to execute it in marble from Thomas Hope, a wealthy English art-patron.
On the whole Thorwaldsen was the most successful of all the imitators of classical sculpture, and many of his statues of pagan deities are modelled with much of the antique feeling for breadth and purity of design.
Thorwaldsen worked sometimes with feverish eagerness; at other times he was idle for many months together.

 Neoclassicism
Its central perspective is perpendicular to the picture plane, made more emphatic by the dim arcade behind, against which the heroic figures are disposed as in a frieze, with a hint of the artificial lighting and staging of opera, and the classical coloring of Nicholas Poussin.
In sculpture, the most familiar representatives are the Italian Antonio Canova, the Englishman John Flaxman and the Dane Bertel Thorwaldsen.
In the decorative arts, Neoclassicism is exemplified in Empire furniture made in Paris, London, New York, Berlin; in Biedermeyer furniture made in Austria; in Karl Friedrich Schinkel's museums in Berlin, Sir John Soame's Bank of England in London and the newly built "capitol" in Washington, DC; and in Wedgwood's bas reliefs and "fl basaltes" vases.

In 1812 Napoleon was expected in Rome, and Thorwaldsen was employed to make the frieze for one of the most spacious halls of the Quirinal Palace.
In the Frue Kirche is his Christ and the Twelve Apostles, the Angel of Baptism, and several reliefs, while in the pediment over the entrance is his terracotta group of the Preaching of John the Baptist.
The influence of Thorwaldsen was perpetuated in his own country by H. Bissen (1798-1868), who early manifested the romantic tendency for subjects from Norse instead of Greek mythology.

His scholarship provided only for three years' residence; but twenty-three years were to elapse before he should again see his childhood's home--as for his parents, he had looked into their eyes for the last time.
Of course we know that the fallow years are as good as the years of plenty; the silent Winter prepares the soil for Spring; and we know, too, that the sense of unworthiness and the discontent that Thorwaldsen felt during his first few weeks at Rome were big with promise.

A gift to the Hospital from one of its trustees, William Wallace Spence, the statue is a replica of a work from 1820 by the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorwaldsen.
On the day the Hospital opened in 1889, Daniel Coit Gilman, the first president of The Johns Hopkins Hospital and University, publicly voiced a wish that a copy of Thorwaldsen's work be donated and placed in the Hospital's rotunda.
It is believed the gift was sought to offset criticism from the more conservative element in late 19th century Baltimore that the hospital had no religious affiliation.

Thorwaldsen, in the course of his long and brilliant career, had treated nearly every subject within the range of his art.
But towards the close of his life, he began to draw his subjects more exclusively from the Scriptures, and find his chief pleasure in working out his own conceptions of the human manifestation of Christ and the divine power.
