At the foot of the field that extends from the Moravian graveyard in Herrnhut lies the small village of Berthelsdorf with the castle of Count Nikolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf.
The castle and the near-by church became the spiritual center of the Moravian and Pietist refugees.
And it was also in Berthelsdorf that many instructions were issued to missionaries world-wide from members of the Moravian mission board.

Nicolaus Ludwig Zinzendorf - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
He had previously, in deference to his family, who wished him to become a diplomatist, rejected the invitation of August Francke to take Baron von Canstein 's place in the Halle orphanage ; and he now resolved to settle down as a landowner, spending his life on behalf of his tenantry.
He bought Berthelsdorf from his grandmother, and selected John Andrew Rothe for pastor and John George Heiz for factor; he married Erdmute Dorothea, sister of Count Henry of Reuss, and began living on his estate.
Zinzendorf offered an asylum to a number of persecuted wanderers from Moravia, and built for them the village of Herrnhut on a corner of his estate of Berthelsdorf.

Christian History - Nikolaus von Zinzendorf - 131 Christians Everyone Should Know
After less than a year at court, he bought the estate of Berthelsdorf from his grandmother, hoping to form a Christian community for oppressed religious minorities.
Because of the spirited preaching at the Berthelsdorf parish church, the population of this "small city" had reached 300 by 1726.
The Berthelsdorf parish church would continue as a Lutheran parish, but became Herrnhut, a Unity of the Brethren congregation; they would later become known as the Moravian Church.

The stately Berthelsdorf Manor House was the residence of Count and Countess Zinzendorf during these early years.
Later it became one of the administrative centers of the Moravian Church, and for about 125 years it was the seat of the Unity Elders' Conference, the central governing board of the Moravian Church.
Thus, in 1998 the "Association of the Friends of Zinzendorf's Berthelsdorf Manor House," a non profit organization, was founded in order to save this historic monument from total destruction.

He granted their request, and a small band crossed the border from Moravia to settle in a town they called Herrnhut, or "the Lord's Watch." Zinzendorf was intrigued by the story of the Moravians, and began to read about the early Unity at the library in Dresden.
His tenants went through a period of serious division, and it was then in 1727 that Zinzendorf left public life to spend all his time at his Berthelsdorf estate working with the troubled Moravians.
There followed an intense and powerful experience of renewal, often described as the "Moravian Pentecost." During a communion service at Berthelsdorf, the entire congregation felt a powerful presence of the Holy Spirit, and felt their previous differences swept away.

While things in Herrnhut were growing worse things in Berthelsdorf were growing better; while stormy winds blew on the hill there was peace and fellowship down in the valley.
