The county was formed as Bertie Precinct in 1722 from the part of Chowan Precinct of lying west of the.
With the abolition of Albemarle County in 1739, all of its constituent precincts became counties.
In the county the population is spread out with 26.10% under the age of 18, 7.70% from 18 to 24, 26.40% from 25 to 44, 23.80% from 45 to 64, and 16.00% who are 65 years of age or older.

Bertie County will shelter and euthanize its own stray animals now that county officials have cut ties to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, and Northampton County is still considering what it will do with its animals since officials there also have suspended an agreement with PETA.
Bertie County has discontinued all cooperation with PETA, and Northampton County has suspended work with PETA until the criminal cases are resolved.
PETA became involved in Bertie County in 2001 after a caller informed the group that the county was using a small gas chamber to euthanize animals.

The counties were divided into township which each elected Boards to assess property for taxes and care for roads, etc. The support for this democratic system was in the fls who only a few years earlier had been slaves as well as those whites in NC who had remained loyal to the Union.
He was born in Bertie County on the 17th of February, 1770, at Hope, which is about five miles West of Windsor, on what was then known as the Old Halifax Road, and is now the Windsor-Lewiston Road.

In the early 1980s a reconnaissance level survey recorded many of Bertie County's distinguished architectural and historic properties.
Since 1969 Bertie County has received $1,076,900 in special state appropriations and $14,000 in federal subgrants.
The Historic Preservation Office assisted the Brockton Art Museum with an exhibit, "The Transference and Transformation of Architectural Thought from the Southern U.S. to Liberia, West Africa," in 1987, and assisted the Bertie County Board of Education in conducting a teachers' workshop on historic preservation for grades four through eight in 1990.
