  Lindblad, Bertil (1895-1965)
Having considered Jacobus Kapteyn’s work on moving stellar streams and Howard Shapley’s proposal that the center of the Milky Way Galaxy lay tens of thousands of light-years away, he put forward the differential rotation theory – namely, that the speed of rotation of stars about the galactic center depends on their distance.
Soon after, in 1927, Jan Oort’s observations of stellar motion provided support for Lindblad’s views, which inspired a number of Swedish astronomers, including Lindblad’s son, Per Olaf (1927-), to specialize in the movements of stars.
Lindblad also helped demonstrate the spiral nature of the Galaxy and, in the 1940s, put forward the density wave theory to explain spiral structure.

HEALTH: UN Plans to Hold Special Session on HIV/AIDS
Bertil Lindblad, Senior Liaison Officer of UNAIDS, said the need for the special session arose ''because the AIDS epidemic has taken on such a magnitude in that it has become a global development crisis today with over 36 million people world-wide living with HIV''.
Lindblad explained that the aim of the session is to ''secure political and social commitments to fight the epidemic and also to expand and intensify international co-operation''.
Lindblad admitted that one of the major difficulties present in the fight against AIDS is the lack of funds.

Lindblad, Bertil   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
He went on to stipulate that the speed of rotation of the stars in the Galaxy was a function of their distance from the centre (the 'differential rotation theory').
Lindblad was born in Örebro and studied at Uppsala.
Lindblad suggested that the two streams of stars Kapteyn had observed could in fact represent the rotation of all the stars in our Galaxy in the same direction, around a distant centre; he thus confirmed Shapley's hypothesis.

1895: On 26 November 1895, Bertil Lindblad was born.
Lindblad was a Swedish astronomer who contributed greatly to the theory of galactic structure and motion and to the methods of determining the absolute magnitude (true brightness, disregarding distance) of distant stars.
He theorised that the areas around the centre of a galaxy revolve and this is why it was flattened.

Lindblad characterized the Declaration as being strong and action-oriented, and he said that the Declaration calls for resources commensurate with the epidemic.

 Astronomy in Sweden 1860-1940
Bertil Lindblad became leader of the Stockholm Observatory after Karl Bohlin retired in 1927, and some years later, in 1931, the new Stockholm Observatory was inaugurated in Saltsjöbaden, outside the city.
Lindblad was mostly interested in theoretical astronomy, working on the way stars move in the galaxies, but the observatory he headed was far better equipped than any of the other Swedish observatories.
The changing status of Swedish astronomy evident in the construction of the Saltsjöbaden Observatory is also evident in the fact that the 1938 General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union was held in Stockholm, indicating the respect that Swedish astronomy was accorded in the international astronomical world.

 The Origins of Spiral Arms
Among the original pioneers of the field was Bertil Lindblad who worked on spiral structure steadily from 1927 through 1965 (Binney and Tremaine 94, hereafter BT94).
Lindblad realized that the naive idea of stars arranged permanently in spirals was untenable due to the winding problem.

 Plaskett, John Stanley (1865-1941)
In 1922, Plaskett identified an extremely massive star as a binary, now known as Plaskett’s Star.
In 1927 he provided confirmatory evidence for the theory of galactic rotation put forward by Bertil Lindblad and Jan Oort.
By 1928 Plaskett, in collaboration with Joseph Pearce, had obtained evidence for the hypothesis formulated by Arthur Eddington in 1926 that interstellar matter was widely distributed throughout the Galaxy; their disocvery that interstellar absorption lines, mainly of calcium, took part in the galactic rotation, showed that interstellar matter was not confined to separate star clusters.

In 1904, Kapteyn found that stars did not move at random but in two streams flowing in opposite directions along the Milky Way, one converging in the constellation of Orion and the other converging 180 deg away, in Scutum.
The Swedish astronomer Bertil Lindblad showed that this streaming motion is simply the result of the rotation of the Galaxy.
Stars traveling in nearly circular orbits around the galactic center with the Sun will have larger motions relative to the Sun either toward or away from the center--depending on whether they are approaching the nearest or farthest points in their elliptical orbits--than in the direction of motion.

Oort early became interested in the discovery that stars in our Galaxy seem to move in two crossing "streams." Through complex calculations he accounted for this movement by confirming the theory--put forth by Swedish astronomer Bertil Lindblad--that the Galaxy rotates.
He later calculated the total mass of the Galaxy, work that led to recognition of the problem of "missing mass" in the universe.

 Jacobus Kapteyn Summary
In 1904, studying the proper motions of stars, Kapteyn reported that these were not random, as it was believed in that time; stars could be divided into two streams, moving in nearly opposite directions.
It was later realized that Kapteyn's data had been the first evidence of the rotation of our Galaxy, which ultimately led to the finding of galactic rotation by Bertil Lindblad and Jan Oort.
In 1906, Kapteyn launched a plan for a major study of the distribution of stars in the Galaxy, using counts of stars in different directions.
