While the commemorative medals of Bertrand Andrieu are obviously the work of a master craftsman who attempted to depict  historical events realistically, other medals and jetons often commemorated those same events symbolically.   An example of this later type is represented by the sole jeton in this virtual collection.

Pewter medal of the storming of the Bastille and the Return of Louis XVI to Paris, by Bertrand Andrieu
Dissemination of 'propaganda' during the French Revolution was very important: through prints, which publicised events quickly after they occurred and on medals, a permanent form of commemoration.
Due to the size and detail of these pieces, Andrieu (1761-1822) had to strike the medals on one side only, using a soft lead alloy coloured to resemble bronze.

Censer & Hunt: Conclusions: Imaging the French Revolution
Wayne Hanley describes the trouble caused for Bertrand Andrieu by his legend on a medal commemorating the October Days of 1789 when a crowd, first of women, then of men, marched to Versailles and forced the king and his family back to Paris.
Andrieu first used the legend “The Nation has Conquered Its King.” He used it in reference to very positive remarks made by mayor Jean-Sylvain Bailly to the king when Louis XVI voluntarily came to Paris on July 17, 1789 to signal his acceptance of the events surrounding the fall of the Bastille.
Times had quickly changed, however, and after October 1789 the legend had a much more ominous ring.
