Bertrand Island, New Jersey, is a small peninsula in Lake Hopatcong, part of the community of Mount Arlington.
It is best known as the former site of the Bertrand Island Amusement Park which existed from 1928 to 1983, as well as being the place of origin for Bette Cooper, 1937's Miss America.
Prior to the building of the amusement park, Bertrand Island actually was an island.

The Park was located at Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey until its closure in 1983.

This is a history of popular culture, in this case Coney island, New York at the turn of the century.
While this is a comprehensive history of the New Jersey park that overlooked the Hudson River opposite Manhattan, it was written by an author who had a minimum knowledge of amusement rides.
The photos are from the Museum of the City of New York, but it is obvious that the author was unfamiliar with the material as 3 of the photos are not from Coney Island.
