As of the 2000 census, the township population was 2,380.
The township is in the southeast portion of the county with Galien Township to the west, Weesaw Township to the northwest, Buchanan and Buchanan Township to the north on the west side of the township.
The city of Niles lies on the northeast corner of the township, while irregularly-shaped Niles Township is to the north on the east side of the township and also to the east of the township.

 History of Bertrand Township, Berrien County, Michigan
THE township of Bertrand is bounded on the north by the townships of Niles and Buchanan; on the east by that portion of Niles that was originally Bertrand, from which it is separated by the St. Joseph River; on the south by the State of Indiana, and on the west by Galien.
This well-known citizen of the township of Bertrand was born near Easton, Northampton Co., Pa., on the 10th day of September, in the year 1821, being the sixth child of Abraham Messenger and his wife, whose maiden name was Margaret Kemerer.
Messenger was twenty-three years old, he and his mother emigrated together to Michigan, where he purchased one hundred and fifteen acres of land, nearly, though not quite entirely, unimproved, situated on Portage Prairie, in the township of Bertrand, about three miles and a half southwest of the city of Niles.

Michigan Shadow Towns describes villages, most of them unincorporated, which have survived near or total demises generally caused by local economic failures and one or more significant declines in population.

In the 1863 Atlas of Michigan, listed as "A fractional township and small post village of Berrien county, on the St. Joseph river, between South Bend, Ind., and Niles, Mich. The township borders on the State of Indiana, and is distant 190 miles south-west from Detroit.
The township was organized in 1856, and is about five miles square; the soil is generally a clay loam, very rich, and well suited to grass and grain with gently rolling surface--the south-east portion hilly.
Pear, apple, and quince trees flourish and bear heavy crops of fruit, which is attributed to the proximity of lake Michigan and the consequent mildness of the climate, preventing the early spring frosts from injuring the trees.

NILES - It's a possibility in the future that residents in the Barron Lake and surrounding area of Howard Township will have an ambulance reach their house a lot quicker in the case of an emergency.
Announced Tuesday night during a meeting of the Howard Township Board, Clerk Shirley Tuttle said that Southwestern Michigan Community Ambulance Service (SMCAS) is looking into staffing an ambulance in the township, and that it is likely the City of Buchanan will be doing this also.
It covers all of Howard Township and the southern portion of Pokagon Township located north of Howard Township.
