  Fish, perch & beryciformes
Beryciformes are primitive predecessors fish of the perch.
Beryciformes are fish which are considered to be the primitive predecessors of the perch.
One of the suborders of the beryciform has three families that are extremely obscure and includes the deep sea pricklefish, the deep sea bigscale fish and the gibberfish.

 Evolutionary Biology - Whalefishes
Phylogenetic investigations of the Stephanoberyciformes and Beryciformes, particularly whalefishes (Euteleostei: Cetomimidae)
Beryciformes in particular is unlikely to be a monophyletic group, with the Berycidae (possibly) and Holocentridae (probably) being more closely related to other lineages.
The Stephanoberyciformes is also unlikely to be a monophyletic group as our samples of one of its supposed families, the Melamphaidae is sister to the Berycidae in the 16S and combined analyses, but dispersed in the 12S analyses.

 atheriniform --  Encyclopædia Britannica
The Beryciformes and Zeiformes apparently form a related group, originating in the Cretaceous, its closest relatives being the Perciformes.
Beryciforms and zeiforms are mostly deep-bodied fishes of small to moderate size, a foot or less in length.
These include a closed swim bladder; separation of the parietal bones by the supraoccipital; jaws that protrude to some extent, with the maxillary bone (toothless except in a few beryciforms) acting as a lever to move the large premaxilla; the pectoral fins inserted high...

Slimehead - Wikpedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Slimeheads, also known as roughies and redfish, are mostly small, exceptionally long-lived, deep-sea beryciform fish comprising the family Trachichthyidae (derived from the Greek trachys ["rough"] and ichthys ["fish"]).
Similar cranial networks are found in the beryciform fangtooths (Anoplogastridae) and the stephanoberyciform ridgeheads (Melamphaidae).
The trachichthyid head is typically blunt with a large and oblique mouth; the snout may project slighty in front of the upper jaw.

Most beryciforms, zeiforms, and lampridiforms are inhabitants of the open oceans, usually living at considerable depth, and little is known of their natural history.
The best known of the beryciform groups are the squirrelfishes and soldierfishes (family Holocentridae), abundant around coral reefs in warm seas.

 What are luminous lanterneye fish?
This is because they are on only known family of fish that have the ability to turn their lights off and on at will.
From the Beryciformes order, these amazing fish carry luminescent organs, which are bean shaped glandular organs, just below the eyes.
Like many of the beryciformes, two of the species, Photoblepharon palpebratus and Anomalops Kaptoptron, make their home in tropical marine areas around the Indo-Pacific regions of the East Indies.

Since 1982 Polish and American scientists have cooperatively amassed a great body of knowledge on the early life stages of marine fishes from the Gulf of Mexico and adjacent waters.
Our recent examination of young beryciform fishes, taken in over 8000 ichthyoplankton samples collected during Southeast Area Monitoring and Assessment Program (SEAMAP) surveys in 1982 to 1995, yielded new insights into the early life history of these unusual, rarely collected fishes.
Six families of beryciform fishes were represented among the specimens we examined.
