Mountain Province is a landlocked province of the Philippines in the Cordillera Administrative Region in Luzon.
Mountain Province was also the name of the historical province that included most of the current Cordillera provinces.
This old province was established by the Americans in 1908 and was later split in 1966 into Mountain Province, Benguet, Kalinga-Apayao and Ifugao.

The municipality of Besao is believed to have derived its name from the Ilocano word \"Buso\" meaning headhunter.
The people then of the neighboring towns specifically those from the Ilocos Region believed that the early \"Besaos\" were headhunters.
Besao is presentky composed of 14 barangays, namely: Agawa, Ambagiw, Banguitan, Besao West, Besao East, Catengan, Gueday, Kin-iway, Lacmaaan, Laylaya, Padanga, Payeo, Suquib and Tambocan.

It was also made the appropriate time to start the village rituals for the yearly rice farming cycle even without confirming from the position of the sun against the fissure in the mountain to the stone calendar in the Gueday “dap-ay,” said the Lasekan couple.
Observing that the stone calendar and “dap-ay” where it had been positioned for centuries is deteriorating, Vice Mayor Harry Baliaga of Besao urged the foundation to preserve the stone calendar for the coming generations.
