Bessian is taking her on a tour of the highlands, and he is extolling the virtues of the Kanun as a legal system.
Bessian has written extensively about the Kanun, and his idea of a honeymoon is to take his young wife to the High Plateau to show her something of the life that has obsessed him for so long.
Bessian is fascinated by the majestic primitivity of the mountain people; he finds a rationale in the blood-feud enjoined by the Kanun, and, because so many people are involved with it, he sees fatalist acceptance frequent early and sudden deaths giving a kind of intensity to life.

In the novel “Broken April” by Ismail Kadare, the reader witnesses a relatively static attitude   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
It is at this point where Diana is quite estranged from Bessian, and he has begun to suspect that she is infatuated with Gjorg, given the fact that she was ‘impressed’ by him, and mentioned him a number of times.
Bessian is completely shocked, and questions his wife after rescuing her from it.
Bessian’s adulation of the Kanun remains static throughout the novel; it could be argued and speculated, however, that he may take, or may have taken a dislike to the Kanun towards the end of the novel, because of what it did to his wife, albeit indirectly.

However, I can't understand why they'd write the word as "bessa" when it's "besa." And it's not "Bessian," but "Besian." It's not "lahoute," but "lahute." There is no such thing as two s's in the Albanian language.
I would add only this: it seems to me that the travellers, Bessian and Diana, represent two sides of the author himself.
