Tess is a 1979 romance/drama film based on the novel Tess of the d'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy and directed by Roman Polanski.
It tells the story of a young peasant woman who is seduced by her wealthy aristocratic cousin, whose right to the family title may not be as strong as he claims.
Although the film is set in England, it was filmed in France.

In 2001 the United States Library of Congress deemed the film "culturally significant" and selected it for preservation in the National Film Registry.

Brazil won the Los Angeles Film Critics Association 1985 awards for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay, as well as Academy Awards in 1986 for Best Art Direction-Set Decoration and Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen.
In 1995 he won the Best Actor Award at Cannes for his performance as Lytton Strachey in the film Carrington.
His comic version of the Master in the 1999 Doctor Who spoof Doctor Who and the Curse of Fatal Death was very well received by critics, partly because of the over-the-top nature of Pryce's portrayal which satirised previous depictions of the character.

That is to say, it is a fine achievement of storytelling but it lacks the qualities of greatness often associated with high art, not only because of what it's been subsequently compared with in its own year, but also in light of what it does achieve on its own limited scale.

She was nominated for an Oscar on two other occasions, in 1966 in the Best Art Direction-Set Decoration, fl-and-white category for ‘The Spy Who Came In from the Cold’ and in 1964 in the Best Art Direction-Set Decoration, Color category for ‘Tom Jones'.
She picked up an Emmy Award in 1995 for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Art Direction for a Miniseries or a Special for ‘Scarlett’.

Stunningly, this three-hour politically correct oater raked in about $184 million and would have been the biggest hit of 1990 were it not for Home Alone.
Looking back, it seems that Unforgiven may have won its Best Picture award more because it was a weak year for movies rather than because it possessed any particular artistic merits.
A few good shots of some of the results of violence would have been enough; they didn't even need to be graphic, as blood and guts don't necessarily create the best arguments.

It was one of the better films of the 1950’s; it is one of reputed director William Wyler’s best outings; and has the splendid distinction of introducing the world to Audrey Hepburn — one of the classiest and most beautiful women to ever walk the face of the earth, much less grace the big screen.
In an interesting story, which is actually related in one of the DVD extras, Gregory Peck recalls a conversation he had with the studio where he demanded that Hepburn, in her first “big” role, receive equal billing in the film’s credits.
Interestingly enough, Frank Capra was originally supposed to direct Holiday, but turned the job down when he found out that it was written by Trumbo, a fllisted writer during the era.

Whilst none of these could have any realistic claim to Best Picture; they have all taken the use of computer generated imagery (CGI) and visual effects to a new level; an achievement I felt worthy of nomination at least.
Well, I was right about Shakespeare in Love getting the Best Film award but I didn't expect it to get quite so many (7) and I didn't expect it to push Saving Private Ryan into second place (5).
Having walked away with three Oscars, Best Actor, Best Foreign Language Film and Best Original Dramatic Music Score, it is obviously well worth a viewing and, hopefully, it shouldn't be long before it gets a full showing in the UK and around the world.
