		The immediate predecessors of the opera were early semi-dramatic forms as the late sixteenth-century madrigals, madrigal cycles (madrigal comedies), the pastoral, the masque, and the intermedii all of which usually featured pastoral scenes and subjects.
		The dominance of recitatives (monody) in early opera was in contrast with the prevailing vocal forms of the time (choral, contrapuntal, polyphonic), and assured comprehensibility of the words.
		At the end of the seventeenth century, certain poets, under the influence of the French drama, advocated that opera librettos be purified: divested of comic scenes and supernatural or other implausible elements in the plot.

		The opera, directed by MSU Professor Pearl Yeadon, is set in a convent in Italy in the early 20th century.
		In this adaptation of Smetana’s opera, the setting was small-town rural America in the 1960s with a traveling circus providing the background for the real plot of Bartered Bride, a young girl, whose parents were trying to arrange a marriage for her, bumped merrily along surrounded by jugglers, clowns, dancers, musicians, and much excitement.
		She has appeared with the Metropolitan Opera, the Victoria State Opera in Australia, the Teatro Municipal in Santiago de Chile, and numerous theaters in Europe and the U.S. As a concert artist, she has performed with the BBC Philharmonic, L’Orchestra de Barcelona, Dallas Symphony, Hong Kong Philharmonic, Nashville Symphony and the Toronto Symphony.

		The Chorus were made up of amateur actors as opposed to the other actors in the plays who were semi-professional (there was only about 3 or 4 main actors in Greek plays since they used masks).
