  color
Similarly, the intensity of a spectral color may alter its perception considerably; for example, a low-intensity orange-yellow is brown, and a low-intensity yellow-green is olive-green.
Note that the color experience of a given light mixture may vary with absolute luminosity, due to the fact that both rods and cones are active at once in the eye, with each having different color curves, and rods taking over gradually from cones as the brightness of the scene is reduced.
When producing a color print or painting a surface, the applied paint changes the surface; if the surface is then illuminated with white light (which consists of equal intensities of all visible wavelengths), the reflected light will have a spectrum corresponding to the desired color.

THE TECHNICOLOR PROCESS OF THREE-COLOR CINEMATOGRAPHY   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
The art of the color cinematographer is intermediate between that of the painter and that of the stage artist.
In color cinematography the difficulties of both are combined; there is the pigment limitation combined with the comparative lack of control of composition.
Now in color cinematography, the brightest red that is available is the full value of red pigmentation in the film, and this is obtained by full value of the magenta and yellow dyes without any cyan dye.

Cinematography and costume design play a huge role, as bright colors of army uniforms and flags distinguish the combating sides.
The color tints in "Traffic" were for pragmatic purposes: to help the viewer distinguish the three storylines, but it also works on an aesthetic level, as the bleached Mexico works perfectly.
In "Ran," I believe the color patterns of the costumes had original aesthetic purposes, but in the battle scenes, they certainly have a practical purpose of distinguishing the armies.

That was the announced Best Picture winner on March 21, 1956, as another dual ceremony was broadcast from the RKO Pantages Theatre in LA (hosted by Jerry Lewis, then relatively new on the film scene) and the NBC Century Theatre in New York (hosted by 30’s heartthrob Claudette Colbert and middle-brow writer/director Joseph Mankiewicz).
Best Actor goes to Gary Cooper for “High Noon”, which is….well, it makes sense for Hollywood, seeing as “High Noon” is very much a “summing up” film for Cooper, tying together a lot of the character-types and themes he dealt with in his career.
Best Director goes to John Ford for “The Quiet Man”, which is a good choice, but not the greatest, as it should have gone to Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen, who are not nominated for “Singin’”.

Only the 18-minute ballet has been reprocessed into a sort of reconstructed stereo, and if a theater plays the whole film in stereo, the result may be the kind of raw-edged sound I heard at a press screening, before the projectionist gave up and switched to mono.
The best choice would probably be to start in mono and physically switch to stereo when the ballet starts—although why so much labor is expended on quasi-stereo effects is beyond me.

It's a great movie best seen projected instead of screened on videotape, laser disk or DVD although I'd heartily recommend it to anyone interested in movies.
The color palette creates a highly impressionistic urban world of ethnic conflict and '50s stylization in dress and speech all the time creating symbols through the use of city spaces.

 REELINSIDER.COM - LAWRENCE OF ARABIA (1962)
The resulting Academy Awards race of which Lawrence of Arabia was the prime beneficiary was filled with eye opening blockbusters, a few noteworthy dramas and genre films and a couple of important foreign films that were largely overlooked but have since become part of the global film culture.
In the first category belong three of the Best Picture nominees including The Longest Day, a now-dated all-star laden depiction of the D-Day landing at Normandy beach, The Music Man, Robert Preston's cinematic triumph following literally hundreds of Broadway performances, and Mutiny on the Bounty, the 1960s reworking of the classic mutineer's tale.
In short, the Best Picture awarded Sam Spiegel for his production of Lawrence of Arabia is demonstrably the just rewards for a veteran filmmaking staff even if more thematically exciting was being worked out in other films that didn't require 4-hours running time and an intermission.

In between lie the best of the epics, and, while it's impossible to single out one as being at the inarguable top of the heap, David Lean's Lawrence of Arabia is certainly a contender for the position.
Riveting from beginning to end, featuring stellar performances, amazing cinematography, and a story without a trace of fat, the film does everything an epic is supposed to do - and more.
Like many of the best classic "war" movies (such as Patton), this one uses the battles as a backdrop for a character study.

Focus on Cinematography: Snapshots of the CSC at 40
Unlike the American Society of Cinematographers, which was by invitation only, it was decided that csc membership would be open to the cinematography fraternity, and in 1959 Robert Brooks and Fritz Spiess sat down to write the bylaws spelling out the aims and goals of the organization.
While some of the rules have evolved with the growth of the csc, it is still basically run by the same bylaws passed by Spiess, Brooks and 13 original members at Toronto's Westbury Hotel in February 1959.
Launched in 1961, awards were presented in four categories: best color cinematography of a theatrical or non-theatrical film, best b&w theatrical or non-theatrical film, cinematography for tv, and best cinematography for a tv commercial.

 REELINSIDER.COM - A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS (1966)
Nominated for Best Picture as a British film in a year with such other important foreign films as Blow-Up and Masculine-Feminine, let along its co-nominated competition in Alfie, The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming, The Sand Pebbles and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, A Man for All Seasons is a pleasure to watch.
As always director Fred Zinnemann's work is strong just as the production design of John Box and the cinematography of Ted More deserve particular merit for giving the film a rich world of color and texture.
In the final analysis, however, A Man for All Seasons is best remembered for Robert Bolt's script and the central performance of Paul Scofield.

 Best Cinematography, 2004
The film's voluptuous play with wide and sumptuous color fields, combined with its dreamlike action in treetops and billowing fields, make it a visual tour de force.
Divisive opinions about the film won't help; nor will the fact that technicians don't tend to benefit from the "payback" principle of overdue or compensatory wins by which actors and directors are sometimes rewarded.
Thankfully, or at least presumably, or at least hopefully, other people realize that "best cinematography" means good cinematography, preferably in a genuinely good movie.

In one of the few instances of it being more daring in its selection of d.p.'s than the American Society of Cinematographers, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences this award season has recognized the full spectrum of expression that cinematography has to offer.
John Seale, who won an Oscar for "The English Patient," was challenged to conjure up the American South for "Cold Mountain" while shooting in Romania.
Why he won't: Films that usually win cinematography kudos are the ones in the race for bigger awards, and "Cold Mountain" got shut out of the picture and director races.
