The choir, which does not hold auditions or award students academic credit hours for participa-tion, achieved notice in 1999 as the first college gospel choir to sign with a major gospel record label.
Dr. Ethel Young-Minor, the choir's faculty co-adviser, said she thought it remarkable that the students achieved a bid for what is considered the recording industry's most prestigious award at this time.
Young-Minor, who helps guide the students with the choir's other faculty adviser-- Lloyd Holmes, UM assistant dean of students for judicial and multicultural student activities-- said she was amazed at the group's latest accomplishment in a relatively short amount of time.

In 1997, Kirk Franklin and God's Property introduced gospel to pop radio and MTV viewers with his breakthrough hit "Stomp." Without sacrificing credibility, Franklin was able to take the message of gospel and combine it with the urgency of experiencing daily true-life struggles.
Franklin was at the forefront of his church choir at the Mt. Rose Baptist Church in Dallas by the age of 11 (earning $100 a month as the minister of music).
The LP was recorded in 1992 at Grace Temple Church in Texas and spent almost 2 years on the gospel charts, charted on RandB charts, and went platinum.
