The best part of Best in Show is not the simple story or any of the many comedic scenes, it's the performances.
Best in Show was shot in 16mm and for that reason the image quality is not as good as one would expect from a recent theatrical release.
Warner Brothers has labelled Best in Show as a special edition and while it doesn't have as many features as some of their other special editions it's still a good collection of features for a movie that didn't really make a major showing at the box office.

Rather, the dog show environment and culture serve merely as a way of revealing the foibles of different sorts of characters in contemporary culture, as well as the genius of talented writers and performers.

"Best in Show" doesn't have the homey, even-handed charm of "Waiting for Guffman," but it stands on all fours as a movie for and about dog lovers and what those, at the levels shown here, are willing to go through to bring their beloved pets to victory.

In Guffman, however, the participants are all from the same community and are putting on a show; they've already forged a bond, and their own hearts and souls are what's thrown up there on the stage.
Stealing the show, though, are Cookie (Catherine O'Hara) and Gerry Fleck (co-writer Eugene Levy), a couple as down-to-earth as their sawed-off Norwich terrier Winky.

Best in Show doesn’t have the universality of Guffman or Tap; even if you are or know dog fanciers, the characters’ passions don’t extend beyond their context.

Best in Show succeeds only insofar as you're willing to laugh at a bunch of sad freaks.
This film is not only the best mockumentary ever made, but most likely the best comedy ever made, from two very important aspects = 1) It makes you laugh repeatedly & 2) It has a wonderful idea that no film writer besides Guest and Levy has yet to explore as a comedy.

Competing in a dog show must be a traumatic affair yet the dogs generally handle themselves unfussily and with great poise.
For their bosses however the dog show is a turning point in their lives.

If you're a dog show insider, you will recognize some of the prominent people and sympathize with Melanie as she survives the week at the National (at least I do, our National is beginning to take up 9 days).

Willard pours it on as the folksy gabber who knows nothing about dog show protocols and Piddock is a superbly patient straight man.
Much of Best in Show's premise is anticipated not only by Waiting for Guffman but by Errol Morris's classic "real" documentary about pet cemeteries and their patrons, Gates of Heaven, but the easygoing overabundance of comic talent and belly laughs overshadow such quibbles.

This justifies Fred Willard's sidesplitting character for being the way he is, a dog show commentator who's reasonably bored with watching the dogs trotted out before a live audience time after time that at one point, he suggests a Sherlock Holmes hat and pipe would increase the bloodhound's chances of winning.
Best in Show will play out better to cat lovers, for the dog owners are really put on the spot, and anyone else who likes dogs but thinks ceremonies built around them are really stupid.

Prior to Best in Show, the best send-up of a dog show took place at the Westminster Dog Show, with Robert Smigel's Triumph the Insult Comic Dog's appearances on Late Night with Conan O'Brien.
While Smigel's sketches were profane and sarcastic, Christopher Guest's Best in Show takes everything seriously, reveling in the basic ridiculousness of the entire matter.
