The Number of the Beast (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Number of the Beast is a heavy metal album released in 1982 (see 1982 in music) by Iron Maiden on EMI in the UK and originally Harvest Records/Capitol Records in the U.S. (now on Sanctuary Records/Columbia Records), and is widely considered to be one of the most influential albums in its genre.
The album was also the centre of much controversy, particularly in America, due to the misinterpretation of the lyrics of the title track and the cover art.
Since this album (and its tour Beast on the Road), "The Beast" has become something of a nickname for the band and possibly Eddie, as suggested by albums such as Best of the Beast (which featured a 'best of Eddie' mural on the cover), Beast over Hammersmith, and the DVD Visions of the Beast.

Despite losing one member in the process, this prolific pop group has put together a greatest hits package that compiles some of their catchiest songs (as well as three brand-new ones) onto one fan-friendly disc.
These new offerings are the undeniable highlights of the album, featuring a more mature, guitar-driven sound that doesn't sacrifice the catchiness of their earlier hits.
The only drawback to The Very Best of Jump5 is the perplexing amount of cover material on the album.

The last album "Eternal" marked the end of a transition for the band as they step by step detached themselves from their fl metal past, re-inventing not only themselves but an entire genre for that matter, leaving old fans with either love or disgust in their minds.
It's not the band's best album to date (but very close to it) but definitely one of the top ten releases of 2004.
The album does have a very fl metal sound, but this atmosphere is still weakened and filtered through Darkthrone's stubborn adherence to slower rock and punk stylings that devastate the possibility of this album rising to become a landmark.

The rest of the band sounds great as well, and the album is highlighted by the fast-paced performances of guitarists Rudolf Schenker and Matthias Jabs.

Nostalgia aside, I've always felt that "album" artists are rarely served by the greatest hits format.
But, having said that, it seems Iron Maiden have decided to go the nostalgic route, now that the song-writing well has started to run dry (witness their last few albums and the amount of live recordings being released).
Thus we arrive at their latest opus, the 78-minute Best of the Beast compilation.
