  Bet Shean, Israel
Bet Shean (the Biblical Bethshan) lies on the river Harod 26km/16mi south of the Sea of Galilee, in the eastern part of the Jezreel plain, which carefully regulated irrigation has made a fertile agricultural area.
This period came to an end with the Arab conquest in 639, and soon afterwards the town was destroyed by an earthquake and abandoned.
In the 12th century Bet Shean was held by Tancred, Prince of Galilee.

Israel: Bet She'an - fantastic ruins
Today's town of Bet Shean was built in the fertile area, which was populated as far back as in the 5th millenium B.C. The hill on the southern bank of Harod river, known as Tel Bet Shean, contains some twenty archaeological strata.
But more extensive and well-preserved are the ruins of the Roman-Byzantine city of Bet Shean - Scythopolis; there is a good view of the ruins (more exactly, of the excavated area, which covers approximately one tenth of the ancient city's territory) from the hilltop.
Among impressive Roman and Byzantine remains of Bet Shean are a large Roman theatre (like that in Caesarea), a Byzantine bathhouse, rooms with Byzantine mosaics, two main colonnaded streets and a Roman temple at their intersection, and even public lavatories.

Beth Shean was part of the territory originally given to the tribe of Manasseh when Israel returned to the promised land at the time of Joshua.
The fact that Beth Shean was referenced as a city even at this early time showed that it was already a significant landmark, a fact verified by the aforementioned early Egyptian presence.

Some of the types have been discovered only at Bet Shean and lack parallels at other sites in Palestine or neighboring countries, while others attest to connections with other parts of the region that vary from period to period.
The final chapter is dedicated to examining the connections between lamp finds from Bet Shean and different regions in Palestine, and the connections with the neighboring countries of Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Egypt.

 Tell el-Husn, Bet Shean
Immediately north of the theater in Bet Shean is Tell el-Husn, a settlement mound on which excavations in the 1920s brought to light mainly stelae, sculpture and other objects dating from the period of Egyptian rule.
Most of the finds, including a stele of Pharaoh Sethos I (1318 B.C.) and a stele depicting the war goddess Anat (1250 B.C.), are now in the Rockefeller Museum in Jerusalem.
Since Bet Shean was destroyed by an earthquake shortly after the Arab conquest the building materials of the ancient town were not - as was the case, for example, at Caesarea - re-used in later buildings.

The vessels have generally been dated on the basis of the pottery, oil lamps and coins from the context in which they were found, and sometimes on analogy with well-dated finds from other sites.
Most of the vessel types discovered at Bet Shean are known from other sites, though a few, such as the Umayyad mosaic glass bowl, vessels with inscribed and plain stamps, and two-part vessels, are very rare or totally unknown elsewhere.
Almost all of the known decorative styles of the Umayyad and Abbasid—Fatimid periods appear at Bet Shean, making it likely that the city had connections with the main centers of glass manufacture in these periods.
