Topic: Beta Cancri

Encyclopedia :: encyclopedia : Beta Israel   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
The Beta Israel (or "House of Israel"), known by outsiders by the term Falasha or Falash Mura ("exiles" or "strangers"), a term that they consider to be pejorative, are Jews of Ethiopian origin.
Some Jewish 'halakhic' authorities have asserted that the Beta Israel are the descendants of the tribe of Dan, one of the Ten Lost Tribes.
An alternative to the view that the Beta Israel are a recent group of Christian converts, is the view that Judaism entered Ethiopia at a very early date and the Beta Israel are a remnant of this ancient Ethiopian Jewish tradition.

 * Beta Cancri - (Astronomy): Definition
Surely, if Cancer (the Crab) were anywhere but on the ecliptic, the apparent pathway of the Sun, it never would have been made into a constellation by the ancients.
The star Tarf (Scientific Name Beta Cancri) is located at right ascension 8h 16.515m and declination 9° 11.133'.
Tarf is a relatively dim star with a magnitude of 3.52.

Beta Pictoris is a star belonging to A5V spectral class, it has a visual magnitude of 3.85, and is approximately 17.17 parsecs (58.68 light years) from Earth.
Levison and his team suggest that this void in the ring is between 10 and 30 astronomical units from Beta Pictoris, and further suggest that not one but two planets are causing the dust depletion zone.
They suggest that the planet is 20 astronomical units from Beta Pictoris, has an orbital eccentricity of 0.01; a nearly circular orbit, and a mass five times that of the Earth.

It has been known since 1983 that the star Beta Pictoris is surrounded by a disk of gas and dust.
Spectra of Beta Pictoris show absorption features which are currently believed to be due to cometary like clouds of gas occultating the star from the debris left over from planetary formation.
observed Beta Pictoris (right) and found the disk to be significantly thinner than previously thought.

Locate M67 by starting at Delta Cancri and extending an imaginary line a little less than eight degrees, or a little less than 4 times the distance between Delta Cancri and M44, to the southeast to find the dim star Alpha Cancri.
Starting at Delta Cancri, extend a line due north for a distance of about 10 degrees, or the distance spanned by your fist held against the night sky at arm's length.

The zodiacal constellation of Cancer, the Crab, is a rather faint and indistinct gathering of stars located between the much more conspicuous constellations Leo and Gemini.
The brightest star in Cancer is commonly known as 'Beta Cancri' and glows somewhat dimly at magnitude 3.5.
The two brighter stars flanking M 44 to the north and south, Gamma and Delta Cancri, were known to ancient mariners as Aselli (or ass's colts), which were seen to be gathered around the glimmering manger (the star cluster) on clear, moonless nights.

The Greeks and Romans saw this "nebula" as a manger, with "Asselli" (asses) eating from it, Assellus Borealis (the Northern Ass, 43 Gamma Cancri) and Assellus Australis (the Southern Ass, 47 Delta Cancri).
Eratosthenes reported that these were the asses on which the gods Dionysus and Silenus rode into the battle against the Titans, who were frightened by the animals' braying so that the gods won.

Though the luminary of the constellation, it still received the Beta designation from Bayer.
Marking one of the celestial Crab's legs, Al Tarf -- from Arabic meaning "the End" -- is rather distant from the most prominent part of the constellation, the four-star "manger" at the center, which contains the naked-eye Beehive cluster.

A rather average star in terms of brightness, Beta Cancri is a red giant about 100 times further away from the Sun than Alpha Centari, the Sun's nearest neighbor.
This otherwise undistinguished star has had its position in the sky measured so accurately that it is considered an astrometric reference star, useful for astronomers who need to calibrate their coordinate systems.
