Beta Crucis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mimosa or Becrux (β Cru / β Crucis / Beta Crucis) is the second brightest star in the constellation Crux and one of the one of the brightest stars in the nighttime sky.
Since Beta Crucis is at roughly −60° declination, it is only visible south of the Tropic of Cancer and therefore didn't receive an ancient traditional name.
Beta Crucis is located approximately 353 light years from Earth's Solar System.

Beta Crucis (Mimosa) is the brightest star of the group, a blue-white giant (nearly five times the Sun's size) with a visual magnitude of 1.25.
Alpha Crucis is by far the best of the group: a splendid binary of equal blue-white stars: 1.58, 2.09; PA 115º, separation 4.4".

 Gacrux / Gamma Crucis 2?
The star lies in the part (12:31:10.0-57:6:47.6, ICRS 2000.0) or "top" of Constellation Crux (see chart and photo), the Southern Cross -- northwest of Mimosa (Beta Crucis), northeast of Delta Crucis, and north of Acrux (Alpha Crucis).
For a time, observers believed that Gacrux had a faint, bluish white (A3 V) binary companion lying within two minutes of arc that is still designated in the SIMBAD Astronomical Database and the Yale Bright Star Catalogue, 1991 5th Revised Edition as Gamma Crucis B (HR 4764 or HD 108925).
Once more massive and brighter than Gacrux and so burnt out much faster, it is now probably a few hundred times fainter than Sol, with 0.6 to 1.4 times its mass and less than one percent of its diameter -- a very dense object at planetary size.
