Virgo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The stars gamma Virginis, eta Virginis, beta Virginis, nu Virginis, and omicron Virginis form the virgin's head: all of these stars are of fourth magnitude except gamma Virginis which is of third magnitude.
The stars gamma Virginis, delta Virginis, zeta Virginis, alpha Virginis, and theta Virginis form the virgin's blouse: alpha Virginis, also known as Spica, is of the first magnitude, whereas zeta Virginis is of the third magnitude.
The stars alpha Virginis, zeta Virginis, tau Virginis, iota Virginis, and kappa Virginis form the virgin's skirt: the last three stars being of the fourth magnitude.

 * Beta Virginis - (Astronomy): Definition
Beta Virginis is called Zavijava, from an Arabic name meaning ‘the angle'.
A string of stars to the northwest of Spica in Virgo (Vindemiatrix, Delta Virginis, Porrima, Zaniah, and Beta Virginis) called "awwa" by the Arabians of old (which vaguely refers to a kennel and a barking dog,...
The star Alaraph (Scientific Name Beta Virginis) is located at right ascension 11h 50.695m and declination 1° 45.883'.

Not only does Beta not really "own" its own proper name, it does not even fulfill the expectation of its "beta-hood" to be the second brightest star.
Zavijava is also not terribly radiant; its modest apparent brightness (enough to be a prominent part of its constellation and the "awwa") owes itself to closeness, the star lying only 36 light years away.
A class F (F9, almost G) dwarf, Beta Vir bears more resemblance to the Sun than to its constellation-mates, radiating only 3.5 solar luminosities from a 6150 Kelvin surface.

The Virginis Combine amat farms were infiltrated and attacked by nanoweaponry, and after their spectacular destruction the whole system was quickly and completely subjugated by the ambitious AI.
The Virginis Combine estimated that the rouge AI posed a grave threat to all systems in the vicnity, and assembled the largest unified fleet at the time to deal with it.
Although their numbers, popularity, and influence has varied over the centuries (and currently is on the decline) the Beta Virginis Solarists go all the way back to the late Interstellar Empires era, when the Dominion annexed the Combine, along with much of the old Conver Ambis.

Astronomers have long known that the star Beta Pictoris has a dust disk.
Astronomers at the time had determined that this disk was either leftover from planetary formation around Beta Pictoris or that planets were in the process of forming inside the disk.
Further observations revealed a gap in the disk of a distance of 5 billion miles, which is roughly similar in size to the area in which the planets of our own solar system orbit.

 Spica
According to the The Bright Star Catalog, the name Alaraph has been applied to Spica as well as to Vindemiatrix and to Beta Virginis.
The combined luminosity of the two stars is about 2200 times that of the sun with about 80% of the light output coming from the giant star.
The giant is a short period variable star of Beta Canis Majoris type with a 4.2 hour period.

We do not know for sure, but with the recent discoveries about 51 Pegasi, 70 Virginis and 47 Ursae Majoris the weight of evidence is now so strong that only a "devil's advocate" denies the conclusions.
It has been known since 1983 that the star Beta Pictoris is surrounded by a disk of gas and dust.
Spectra of Beta Pictoris show absorption features which are currently believed to be due to cometary like clouds of gas occultating the star from the debris left over from planetary formation.

In most cases only individual orbiting structures were found; the exceptions are Denebola, which appears to have an extensive asteroid disk with several noticeable artificial structures, and Beta Virginis which has a terrestrial type planet (tentatively named Tsunetari) orbited by several artificial constructions.
No significant changes in the presence of constructions occured for most of the systems when the observation point was moved, suggesting a fairly slow spread or even a static society.
The exception was Beta Virginis, which appears to be under development; terraforming is not ruled out.

UPDATE: 2003 MAY 23, 17:57 UT On the evening of 2003 Jun 24 UT, the 76 km diameter asteroid (124) Alkeste will occult beta Virginis, a 3.6 mag star in the constellation Virgo for observers along a path across Australia and New Zealand.
Observers with cam corders or other portable video cameras capable of imaging beta Virginis are strongly encouraged to do so.
If possible, observers should use a shortwave radio or GPS derived time source for their observations (eg play WWVH on a radio recorded either by the video camera or on a tape recorder recording observer comments).

Note that the designation Virginis refers to the traditional identities of stars in Virgo, while other nearby stars from adjacent constellations are included for the sake of completeness.
Accordingly, stars that are not designated with a member of the Greek alphabet (such as 109 Virginis) may still be included in a traditional view of Virgo while named stars such as Gienah Ghurab and Denebola might also be included in an expanded view of Virgo.
In fact, the four bright stars: Arcturus, Denebola, Zubenelgenubi, and Gienah Ghurab nicely frame Virgo, and these four might have been viewed by the designers of the Northern France cathedrals to be part of the Virgo symbolism in their plans.

Shortly after 10.30 pm, residents of the northern South Island will have the chance to see the asteroid Alkeste pass in front of the bright star beta in the constellation of Virgo (the Virgin), blocking the star’s light for up to 4 seconds..
Sometime between 10:35 pm and 10:40pm (but most likely just after 10:37pm), the star beta Virginis will suddenly disappear as the faint asteroid blocks it from view.

The 3.6 magnitude star Beta Virginis will be occulted by asteroid (124) Alkeste on 2003 June 24.

The circle centred on Beta Vir has a 5° diameter, so all stars in the field should be visible in binoculars when Beta Vir is centred.
