 Beta Carotene
Beta carotene is safely stored in the body, where it serves as an antioxidant.
Beta carotene is a pro-vitamin A—being converted to Vitamin A as needed by the body.
Beta carotene also seems to serve in functions such as repairing DNA damage as beta carotene (not pro-vitamin A).

 Beta Carotene
Beta carotene provides a good lesson, especially because it was a star among supplements.
Beta carotene is oxidized as it inactivates the free radicals from cigarette smoke, and its antioxidant capacity is "used up." In the process, it can turn into a pro-oxidant or form oxidized by-products, particularly if adequate amounts of vitamins C and E aren't present.
Beta carotene is plentiful in vegetables and fruits, and is beneficial in this form.

 Beta-carotene
Beta carotene is a natural antioxidant which helps to protect the body from disease.
Beta carotene can also help to strengthen the immune system, increase lung capacity, reduce the skin’s risk to sun and DNA damage as well as reduce cholesterol levels.
Beta carotene is part of a larger family of nutrients called carotenoids, which are plant pigments with vitamin-like properties.

 Go Ask Alice!: Beta-carotene
Although this study was not completed, researchers found 28% more lung cancer in those taking the beta- carotene - Vitamin A combination.

Look for products that combine beta-carotene with other carotenes such as alpha-carotene, lycopene, lutein, zeaxanthin, and cryptoxanthin.
Until more information is available, it's probably wise to get beta-carotene in supplement form only as part of a mixed complex, along with other health-promoting carotenoids.
In addition to the numerous studies on beta-carotene's effectiveness for heart disease and cancer, researchers have been exploring the nutrient's potential for treating chronic fatigue syndrome, Alzheimer's disease, fibromyalgia, male infertility, and psoriasis.

 Beta-Carotene
Another possibility is that beta-carotene alone is not effective, and the other carotenes found in fruits and vegetables may be more important for preventing cancer than beta-carotene.
The situation with beta-carotene and heart disease is rather similar to that of beta-carotene and cancer.
One researcher has suggested that taking beta-carotene supplements depletes the body of these other beneficial carotenes, and thereby causes a harmful effect.

 - Supplements
In 1994, the results from a large (almost 30,000 subjects) supplementation study (ATBC – the Alpha- Tocopherol and Beta- Carotene study) showed not only that beta-carotene supplements (20mg/day for 5-8 years) did NOT prevent lung cancer in high risk subjects (long-time male smokers), but actually caused an increase in lung cancer risk by almost 20%.
In 1996, another large study (CARET – the Beta- Carotene and Retinol Efficacy Trial) found virtually the same thing – with subjects receiving beta-carotene showing almost 50% more cases of lung cancer.
Unfortunately, intervention studies that have looked at purified beta-carotene supplements (not mixed carotenoids) have not cleared up any of the confusion.
