LILA -> Ayahuasca, Religion, and Nature
Such plants - many of which have emetic, purgative, cathartic, dream-inducing and/or visionary effects — are used to facilitate states of consciousness that are believed to open into the worlds of spirit.
In the typical ayahuasca preparation, the molecular basis for this lies in the betacarboline complex (harmine, tetrahydroharmine, etc.) and the indole dimethyltryptamine (DMT).
These are part of a structural group that includes neurotransmitters, molecules used to effect internal communication in the human body.

Interactions between Betacarboline and Benzenoid Bases: FTIR Evidence for the Formation of NH- Hydrogen Bonds   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
In the presence of benzene, naphthalene, or phenanthrene, the NH stretching band of betacarboline in tetrachloroethane diminishes in intensity while a new red-shifted band grows.
These changes are attributed to the formation of molecular association complexes between betacarboline and the benzenoid compounds.
On the other hand, experiments using harmane, the 1-methylated betacarboline, proved steric hindrance for naphthalene and phenanthrene, which should be a consequence of the geometry of the complexes.

Two of these classes of molecules that have gotten some interest lately are tryptamines and the betacarbolines.
Ibogaine has a betacarboline "backbone," the back of the molecule is betacarbonline-like.
Well, it turns out that there are endogenous betacarbolines in our brain.

Polyphenols (tanins), for example, are present in beer and wine and play a role in preventing heart and circulatory disease by acting on the fat metabolism.
Another interesting component in beer is harman, a betacarboline.
Nonharman, a substance belonging to the same class, is also found in tobacco.

The invention was for a new patent I had filed for the use of betacarbolines in combination with noribogaine.
An example of a betacarboline would be harmaline, a substance that is one of the ingredients in Yage or Ayahuasca used in the Sainte Daime Church.
The reality was that Deborah, either out of ignorance or purpose, never overcame the Patent Office objections to the noribogaine patent and further, she had never supplied me with any information indicating the combined used of betacarbolines and noribogaine to treat addiction.

 Walking Between the Worlds:
I have discussed elsewhere that the pineal betacarbolines are linked with psychic states of consciousness and with the shamanic out-of-body state through the similarity of the harmala alkaloids and pinoline (Roney-Dougal, 1986,1988,1990,1991,1993, 1999).
Callaway suggests that psychoactive tryptamine derivatives in the CNS of mammals play a role in the manifestations of visual and emotive phenomena during normal dream sleep.
The hypothesis is extended to include psychoses by suggesting that hallucinatory psychotic episodes may result from a desychronised dream mechanism, where the individual essentially dreams while awake (Callaway, 1994).

Certain aryl fused imidazopyrimidines; a new class of GABA brain receptor ligands - Patent 5212310
This compound is a high affinity competitive inhibitor of benzodiazepine and betacarboline binding and is capable of blocking the pharmacological actions of both these classes of compounds.
When a radiolabeled form of this compound was studied (Mohler & Richards, 1981, Nature 294: 763-65), it was demonstrated that this compound would interact with the same number of sites as the benzodiazepines and betacarbolines, and that the interactions of these compounds were purely competitive.
This compound is the ligand of choice for binding to GABAa receptors because it does not possess receptor subtype specificity and measures each state of the receptor.

In adults REM sleep occurs about every one to one and half hours throughout the night so that dreams occur three to four times a night
Furthermore J.C. Callaway in an interesting medical hypothesis on a proposed mechanism for visions in sleep has indicated that the periodic REM sleep is due to the interaction between Pinoline (the betacarboline similar to ayahuasca) and serotonin.
Moreover this Beta carboline is functional in inducing REM sleep, lucid dreaming, and other naturally occurring states such as deep meditation.

Therefore, unless the vinegar/gall mixture contained harmala, you would either A) have to have a mushroom containing beta carbolines in addition to tryptamines (like ayahuasca); or B) what is more interesting, have to have a tryptamine incorporating a sidechain that funtions as third ring.
As for A), it's possible; and I don't know, which is why I am publishing this on mayday@onelist and ibogaine@ibogaine.org, hoping the stores of erudition thereon can tell us whether such a mushroom, which would be the functional equibalent of ayahuasca, containing its own betacarbolines in addition to tryptamines, exists.
Which leaves B) the anokhi mushroom represents an unknown indole ring alkaloid capable-- because it contains a sidechain acting as a third ring--of NMDA activity.
