In 1402, the conquest of the islands began, with the expedition of Juan de Bethencourt and Gadifer de la Salle to the island of Lanzarote, Norman nobles who were vassals of Henry III of Castile.
Las Palmas defeated Francis Drake in 1595, but was ruined by the Dutch in 1599.
The rivalry between the elites of the cities of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas for the capital of the islands would lead to the division of the archipelago into two provinces in 1927, though this has not laid to rest the rivalry between the two cities, which continues to this day.

Betancuria is a Canarian municipality in the northern portion of the island of Fuerteventura in the Las Palmas province in the Canary Islands The population is 721 (ISTAC, 2003), its density is 6.96/km² and is excepted to reach 100/km² and the area is 103.64 km².
The population is the smallest in Fuerteventura as well as the province of Las Palmas and all of the Canary Islands.
The city of Betancuria is named after Jean de Béthencourt and was founded in 1404 by Gadifer de La Salle and Jean de Béthencourt and was the main city in the central part of the island until the 1800s.

Spectacled Warbler (orbitalis) A X was at the viewpoint at 27km on the FV30 to Betancuria on 17/4, and 1 was at Rosa del Taro on 21/4.
Two were seen on the road to Pajara, and one in the mountains on the FV30 to Betancuria at the 26km viewpoint on the 17/4.
Linnet 2 near La Lajita Zoo on 16/4, and 2 at the 27km viewpoint on the FV30 to Betancuria.

Andrew Holden and myself spent a week on the island of Fuerteventura in late January/early February with several species being targeted as well as the need to observe several distinct forms of species that are endemic to either the island or the Canary Islands as a whole.
When you reach Las Parcelas, just after leaving the scattering of houses you will be confronted by a sharp right hand bend with a goat farm on the left.
Only noted at two sites - the plains to the NW of La Oliva at Rosa de los Negrines where 10 were seen on 29th Jan, and the other site being the plains (Istmo de la Pared) to the north of Costa Calma.

 Birdwatching Trip Report from Fuerteventura
Moving onto Betancuria a local race (degener) Blue Tit was seen well in the grounds of the craft museum.
Moving on to Las Penitas the instructions in Clarke and Collins were not understood so the reservoir edge was not reached, but the walk added Song Thrush (only one of the trip) and then Spectacled Warbler to the birds seen.
Returning to Las Penitas to crack the access to the reservoir edge was successful, and produced the only Sardinian Warblers seen during the week.
