National MS Society | Betaseron (Interferon beta-1b)
Betaseron is a medication manufactured by a biotechnological process from one of the naturally occurring interferons (a type of protein).
Betaseron is approved by the FDA for the treatment of relapsing forms of MS to reduce the frequency of clinical exacerbations.
Because of the potential of Betaseron to affect the functioning of the liver and thyroid gland, and to alter the levels of white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets in a person's system, blood tests are recommended at regular intervals.

BETHESDA, Md., Sept. 13-Although treatment with Betaseron (interferon β-1b) appears to reduce the frequency of so-called fl hole lesions, as seen by MRI scans of patients with multiple sclerosis, the drug does not contain the damage if one forms.
Advise patients that in this very small study, Betaseron appeared to be effective at protecting the brain against some but not all new MS lesions.
Although Betaseron has been shown to reduce formation of both fl holes and contrast-enhanced MS lesions on MRI, it had been unclear whether the drug had any effect on the duration of lesions once they've formed, wrote Dr. Bagnato and colleagues.

The new indication is based on results from the BENEFIT (BEtaseron in Newly Emerging multiple sclerosis for Initial Treatment) Study of patients with a first clinical demyelinating event and MRI features suggestive of MS.
In the randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicenter trial, 468 participants were given either Betaseron 250 micrograms (mcg) subcutaneously every other day or placebo until they experienced a second clinical event or relapse, which confirms the diagnosis, or they had been followed for at least 24 months.
