Betelgeuse, also called α Orionis, is a large red star in the constellation of Orion.
It is the 12th brightest star in the sky, a red supergiant, and is a vertex of the Winter Triangle.
There is consensus that such a supernova would be a spectacular astronomical event, but would not represent any significant threat to life on Earth given the star's current distance.

 VEXILLOLOGY
Although Orion is "The Hunter" in Western astronomy, according to the "Elvish Mythology" of J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, this constellation is "Menelvagor, the Swordsman of the Skies." I have been impressed with the ideals and morals of Tolkien's "Elves" and strive for similar goals.
The star is a representation of Betelgeuse, the brightest star in the constellation Orion, and is a symbol of the desires and dreams of my heart and mind.
The arrow-head shapes are pointing out from the star, signifying my expanding interests and a thirst for knowledge.

Then you begin to recognise the rest of Orion: There's Betelgeuse in Orion's left shoulder and Rigel is his foot.
And once you recognize Orion, you can remember that Orion's Hunting Dogs are always nearby.
