General info: Beth Gibbons was born January 4th, 1965, in Exeter, UK, and raised on a small farm twenty miles outside of town with three sisters.
You could say Beth was a quiet child, forgoing the night life in the city nearby and preferring to stay home with her mother and listen to records.
Beth feels that she can't express herself in a half-hour telephone interview, and she's afraid to be wrongly represented by false quotations.

With Beths voice, however, it was possible to build up the atmosphere of the songs around the melody and the chords rather than being dictated to by a rhythm track" whilst for Beth "It was the chance to explore songwriting, to have another challenge.
There were Beth's chords and melody for 'Mysteries', and Paul's lyric to 'Rustin Man', which subsequently became his alias "'Rustin Man' was one of the first tracks we finished, and it just seemed appropriate.
One inspiration for Beth, is that, while seasons stay the same, we nevertheless grow with age.

CLUAS Indie Album Reviews: Beth Gibbons & Rustin Man 'Out of Season'
Described as a one-off collaboration, the most evocative female voice of the nineties, Beth Gibbons, has joined forces with former Talk Talk bassist Paul Webb, now trading under the guise of Rustin Man. With Portishead, Gibbons had played a vital role in the conception of two of the decade's most astounding musical artefacts.
Beth never really gave a damn about record sales, PR or public perception, and she usually stayed out of the limelight.
Gibbons' voice is stripped down, as is the understated production of Webb, which is dominated by quiet acoustic and outdoor sounds.

Beth Gibbons - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Beth Gibbons (born 4 January 1965, in Exeter, Devon, England) is the vocalist for the trip-hop band Portishead.
Barrow and Gibbons joined jazz guitarist Adrian Utley, and the sessioners John Baggott, Jim Barr and Clive Deamer to record two successful and critically praised Portishead albums.
Gibbons has also collaborated on a separate project with Paul Webb, aka Rustin' Man. In October 2002, the album, Out of Season, was released in the UK, and in October 2003 it was released in the U.S. Her Piafesque singing (partly due to her heavy smoking habit) makes her especially popular in France.

If Gibbons is giving us a mere glimpse of what is to come on the new Portishead album (not that this album even has anything to do with Portishead), I think we'll see their best album yet.
Beth Gibbons has the same chain-smoked voice, an unsatisfying eager for dark, sometimes even depressing moods and there is indeed something filmish, something cinematic about her lyrics.
Beth is indeed a nightclub singer who sings her songs for the zillionth time, meanwhile dreaming of getting out, getting anywhere but in the place and present she's in now.

Beth Gibbons & Rustin Man: Out of Season (2003): Reviews
That Out of Season leaves an imprint, and a powerfully lasting one at that, is a testament to Gibbons’ carefully sculpted lyrics and her vocal interpretation of same, combined with Webb’s unobtrusive but no less vital studio work.

Gibbons cannot be doubted for having taken some clever risks -- this album makes a cross into jazz, soul, autumnal and even folk arpeggios.
Gibbon's voice is interesting and emotive, as always, but the lyrics seem to lack edge, and music isn't especially interesting- piano and orchestral mainly.
I understand that artists want to experiment and not be pidgeonholed and whatnot, maybe Beth Gibbons didn't want to spend the rest of her life as a Trip-Hop Goddess, but this album seems like a sort of ordinary use of her extrordinary talents.

Beth Gibbons : Out of Season - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
Out of Season plays to Beth Gibbons' strengths as a vocalist and songwriter more than anything released prior by Portishead.
On both Dummy and Portishead, her pained, worn, resilient voice was often made to sound as if it was as much an artifact as the Isaac Hayes and Lalo Schifrin samples.
That "what if" is answered with this album, made by Gibbons in collaboration with Paul Webb, several of his fellow Talk Talk alums, and numerous others.

Paste Magazine :: Review :: Beth Gibbons & Rustin Man - Out of Season :: Sanctuary (Page 1)
As the vocal instrument of Portishead, Beth Gibbons was the centerpiece of 1994’s Dummy, a trip-hop landmark and one of the great albums of the 1990s.
Particularly affecting are the opening “Mysteries,” on which Gibbons is accompanied only by acoustic guitar and a backing chorale of alien angels, and the hushed “Show,” with its delicately played piano, stand-up bass, cello and flute caressing her world-weary vocal.
But here and there on the album, Gibbons modifies her delivery, most overtly on “Romance,” wherein she almost playfully (relatively speaking) impersonates a Billie Holiday-like torch singer amid languorous strings and brass, accented by siren-like backing vocals that sound like they were lifted from some 1940s Hollywood fantasy.

Beth Gibbons and Rustin Man (Paul Webb) - Out of Season (Album Review)
Instead, Gibbons retains a touch of the hypnotic air that graced much of Portishead’s catalog, though she, Webb, and multi-instrumentalist Adrian Utley (another Portishead alumnus) strip the music down to its barest essence of jazz, folk, blues, and soul.
There’s no question that Gibbons has a tremendous voice, and she uses it to great effect on much of Out of Season, filling her torch songs with an undeniable resonance that demonstrates her remarkable ability to turn each subtle nuance into something bigger.
Indeed, the only thing memorable about the remainder of the album is the creeping, all-consuming darkness that envelops her voice on Funny Time of Year and a sterling cover of The Velvet Underground’s Candy Says that seems to be suited perfectly to the flavor of Out of Season.

Beth Gibbons & Rustin' Man - Out Of Season : album review
Beth Gibbons is best known for being the extraordinary voice behind Portishead who more or less defined "trip-hop" in 1994.
Only the closing Rustin' Man is a disappointment - the ambient effects overwhelm the song, leaving Gibbons' vocals indistinct, which is somewhat of a crime, given the quality of her voice.

After a protracted absence, Portishead lynchpin Beth Gibbons is back - but with a collective called Rustin Man. The only UK show (so far) in support of their new album Out Of Season drew a full house who cheered loudly when Gibbons appeared on the scene.
Gibbons sounded powerful and fragile simultaneously, in a way surely not heard since Sandy Denny and with the vaguest hint of Billie Holliday about her.
There was a song by way of encore - Rustin' Man? - and then Gibbons self-effacingly voiced her hope that her audience had liked the set.
