  Beth Goobie: Power and Survival
If Beth Goobie is not one of Canada’s most famous writers, she is definitely one of the country’s most prolific.
Goobie is also much more than a writer -- she is a survivor.
Therapy is an important part of recovery, and for Goobie, a large part of her therapy is writing.

Goobie's novel tries to uncover what makes some kids bullies and some kids their victims, examines the power of friendships and the strength that can be found in family ties, and delicately looks at the secrets and lies that sometimes lurk behind kids' daily lives.
Beth Goobie must have been an outsider as a teen, because she writes with brutal honesty in many of her books about what it is to be alienated.
Acclaimed Canadian novelist Beth Goobie's newest book for young adults is a sometimes-frightening tale of a quasi-secret society of teens whose sole purpose is to control the daily lives of fellow students at Saskatoon Collegiate School.

Goobie seems to be testing my knowledge – and my willingness to accept what she tells me. Over the course of our conversation she says many things that require an explanation.
Goobie’s latest novel is Flux, the story of a 12-year-old girl who is able to slip into other parallel levels of existence, where she encounters a double for everything, including herself (it was reviewed by Kenneth Oppel in Q&Q’s April issue).
Goobie says that once Flux was finished, she read a book on quantum physics and was surprised to find validation for her story of parallel universes and vibratory states.

Beth Goobie, Before Wings   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Beth Goobie explores the territory between life and death in her haunting and luminous novel Before Wings.
The images Goobie employs are equally subtle -- the short-lived mayflies, the use of light, lightning and electricity, the Wishing Tree that suffers a powerful injury yet survives -- all tie into the struggle Adrien faces in her choice between life and death.
Goobie's writing is very evocative; her descriptions and images resonate.

There is no evidence that Goobie's work inspired the same degree of horror as its predecessor, but it does appear that a publisher for it might not have been immediately easy to come by.
However, it is obvious that both Cormier and Goobie were inspired by this story, and for Goobie, not only does she use the same title, but she also keeps the idea of the lottery "winner" as more of a lottery loser, or chosen scapegoat.
Religion, as portrayed by Goobie, is not seen in the traditional sense, but instead through music and cults.

She has described a life of ritualized predation, starting from the birth of her protagonist, Dori, and delving ever deeper into the insidious activities of Dori's devil-worshipping cult, the Kin.
Instead of balking at the terror of her task, Goobie has engaged us head-on with every detail of depravity.
Clearly meant to indicate differentness and perhaps otherworldliness, it is nevertheless a symptom of the underlying pathology of the novel: an obsession with form without sufficient concentration on substance.

Goobie, author of the award-winning Before Wings and other YA novels, makes this tale--clearly written in homage to Shirley Jackson's famous short story of the same name--a gripping and powerful narrative.
English teachers may want to have students compare the two; the novel also provides a great opening to a discussion of peer pressure, and how and why people gain power over others.
