Troubled Times: Beth Horon   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Yet a detail of the incident at Beth Horon does suggest that the Book of Joshua was describing an extraordinary astronomical event.
A rain of stones was supposed to have fallen on the Amorites and decimated them before Joshua's army chased them through the Beth Horon pass to finish them off.
The most realistic explanation of the biblical story would be one that accounts for both the extraordinary phenomena at the battle of Beth Horon: a devastating rain of stones, followed by the Sun's standing still in an extended day.

[b-hebrew] Beth-horon Origin   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
I would think the opposite - like much of the conquest narrative in Joshua, it reflects the Iron II geography of the time of its composition.
However, unlike the cases of Jericho, Ai, Gibeon, Hebron and other sites which simply did not exist in the Late Bronze or Iron I periods, nowhere does Joshua claim that the town of Beth Horon was conquered.
Assuming, as the archaeological evidence seems to point to, that the town(s) of Beth Horon were Israelite and not Canaanite, the important road known as the Beth Horon Acsent (today's route 443) was only given that name during the Iron Age.

The towns, known as Upper and Lower Horon, were strategically located on the Gibeon-Aijalon road and guarded the important "ascent of Beth-Horon." Biblical tradition attributes their founding to Sheerah, daughter of Beriah, son of Ephraim (I Chron.
They were located on the border between the territory of the tribe of Ephraim and that of Benjamin (Josh.
Archaeological finds indicate that Lower Beth-Horon, where potsherds from the Late Bronze Age onward have been uncovered, was established before Upper Beth-Horon, where the finds date only from and after the Iron Age (the Monarchy).

There is a notable absence of towns in the Jordan valley itself, such as Beth Shan,...
Although the coastal plain region associated with the Philistines was supposed to be a goal of the original possession of the land, no towns were appointed for the Levites here.
A few of the towns are explicitly associated with religious activities in later Old Testament books, for example the Benjamite towns of Gibeon, Geba and Anathoth: also Shechem, Gezer and Ashtaroth.
