 Beit Shemesh: Biblical City on the Border Between Judah and Philistia
The Bible mentions Beit Shemesh in the description of the northern border of the Tribe of Judah (Joshua 15:10-11) and as a Levitical city in the territory of Judah.
Talmudic sources describe Beit Shemesh as a small village; in the Byzantine period a large, fortified monastery was built on the southeastern part of the tel.
In the 10th century BCE, probably during the reign of King Solomon, Beit Shemesh was rebuilt, and served as a regional administrative center of the Kingdom.

BETH, IR, AND EN           In addition to Beth Shemesh the Scriptures and John Strong's Hebrew Lexicon also refer to Ir Shemesh and to En Shemesh as witnesses.   Thus, there are actually three witnesses attesting to the location of GOD'S Holy Arks.
          So, again, what is the number 50,070 all about?   Could it be a baseline for a unique triangle connecting the Altar of Ebenezer, the altar before the Solomonic Temple, and the apex of Beth Zur (the home of the rock)?   Each are described as Beth Shemesh, Ir Shemesh, and En Shemesh.
          Now the ruins of Beth Zur are just North of Hebron.   But when examining different maps, Beth Zur was plotted in slightly different locations on each.   Therefore, Beth Zur's ruins were not too dependable a place to start.

Elihu Grant of Haverford College (Haverford, Pennsylvania) directed excavations at Beth Shemesh, a seven-acre tel, or mound, situated about twelve miles west of Jerusalem, known in the Bible as the birthplace of Joshua.
At the time of the conquest, according to the Bible, Beth Shean is one of the cities from which the Israelites did not rout the Canaanites (Joshua 17:11; Judges 1:27), and the city onto whose walls the Philistines "fastened" the body of Saul and those of his sons (1 Samuel 31:10).
The site of Beth Shean (Tell el-Husn, modern Beisan) is located on a large ten-acre mound.
