  THE GOD OF BETHEL
God, in a subsequent period of his history, reminded him of this memorable incident, doubtless with a view of strengthening his faith and comforting him under a new and severe trial through which he was then passing- the grinding avarice and base treachery of Laban, his father-in-law.
Next to the revelation of God as the God of atonement, the God that pardons sin, the most needed and precious revelation of Him is, as the God that hears and answers prayer.
God is the Divine Object of Prayer; therefore, each distinct Person in the Godhead is a Being to whom it is proper that prayer should be separately, divinely, yet unitedly addressed.

"The God of Bethel" - Gen 31:13 - by Murdoch Campbell
It was this apprehension of the holiness of God that led Jacob to separate himself from every species of idolatry, and which made him plead with his household to put away their strange gods and to purify themselves from the defilements of their idols.
He knew that he was in the presence of a “jealous” God to whom sin in every shape and form was a loathsome thing and the cause of alienating the affections of His people from Himself.

BCG Resolution   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-09)
God can predict [but not foreknow with certainty] a great deal of what we will choose to do, but not all of it, because some of it remains hidden in the mystery of human freedom.
A God who is learning billions of new certainties every hour, and who is adjusting his plans continually to deal with these new certainties, is a different kind of God than one who knows infallibly all that shall come to pass.
Because the openness view of God imputes to him a massive ignorance and a continual process of learning and adapting to the unknowable future, which is unworthy of the biblical vision of God.

Meridian Magazine:: Ideas: Bethel, an Ancient Israelite Shrine
Bethel is also found as either a god and/or a euphemism for the name of a god in both pagan Aramaic and some fifth century BC Jewish texts from Elephantine in
.  As such, the Canaanite god Bethel (= “[the god of] the house of god”) appears in Hellenistic times as Biatylos, and is associated with the veneration of sacred stones known as baitylia, which some scholars speculate may be linked with Jacob’s sacred stone which he called “bethel” (Gen 28.17).
During the Middle Ages Jacob’s vision of the stairway to heaven at Bethel became a potent symbol for the mystical ascent of the soul into the presence of God, especially in the work of John Climacus, a monk at Mt. Sinai (John Climacus: The Ladder of Divine Ascent [Paulist Press, 1982]).
