Siamese fighting fish - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Members of the genus Betta, to which the Siamese fighting fish belongs, are a type of "labyrinth fish" (a name also given to anabantids) because they have a labyrinth organ in their heads that allows them to take oxygen directly from the atmosphere rather than from water via their gills.
Betta males are the ones to raise the fry (baby bettas) and will, even when not in presence of female or fry, build bubble nests of various sizes and thicknesses on the top of their tanks.
Although bettas are most aggressive towards each other, they have been known to kill very small fish or nip at the fins of fish such as fancy guppies; oftentimes, the betta will mistake their finnage for that of another male fish and attack the guppy.

Betta - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Betta Bleeker, 1850, is a large genus of small, often colourful, freshwater ray-finned fishes in the gourami family (Osphronemidae).
The mouthbrooding species are sometimes called "pseudo bettas", and are sometimes speculated to have evolved from the nest-builders in an adaptation to their fast-moving stream habitats.
splendens is frequently sold in the United States simply as "betta", and fish fanciers are often unaware that, as of 2006, around 65 species are classified in the genus Betta.

Betta (Siamese Fighting Fish) - Betta splendens
Bettas are fairly aggressive and pugnacious fish, not only to their own kind but also towards several other species of fish.
Bettas that have indulged in plenty of fights seem to be more aggressive towards other fish in a community tank.
Therefore, it is not absolutely safe to include a betta in a community collection of fish untill and unless one is absolutely sure that his or her betta is completely docile and peaceful.

Betta splendens: culture and breeding notes
Betta splendens is the scientific name; the local, indigenous names are Plakat (pla kat in Thai means, "biting fish"), with Plakat Mhor and Plakat Cheen being the fighting-fish and ornamental varieties of Plakat, respectively.
Bettas are anabantid fish with an elongate, rounded body; sexual dimorphism is markedly strong, with males having longer fins.
Bettas are anabantids, belonging to a special group of fishes that have a secondary breathing organ- the labyrinth organ- that enables them to breathe air directly from the surface of the water.

Bettas obtain oxygen from the water through their gills like other fish, but they are unique in that they also breathe atmospheric air with their labyrinth organ.
If your bettas are kept in one or 2-gallon bowls and you perform 100% water changes regularly, which maintains good water quality, then knowing what the ammonia level measures at is critical, to be sure that you have your water maintenance schedule down, so that ammonia never shows up.
Bettas will even flare at their own reflection on the tank wall, which they can more easily see when the tank lights are on and the room lights are off.

ARG - Aquarium & Pond Info - Betta splendens, the Siamese fighting fish
The males of Betta splendens, and in fact, even the females of the species are very belligerent to their own kind and often to other anabantoid fishes.
In fact, bettas can be found living in nearly any suitable body of water including in water trapped in the stumps and trunks of trees which had been recently submerged by floods.
Keeping bettas in aquariums is the best practice, but care should be taken to keep them with other fishes which will not pick on their long fins and with which the bettas will not fight.

Betta splendens: General Information and Breeding by Karl Baumgarten
The original betta doesn’t have the long, colourful, flowing fins and thin long body of the fancy type, but instead has a short, stocky body with fins like a female betta, with red, green and blue being the predominant colours.
The betta, in my opinion, is one of the easiest first fish to keep, because they don’t require a huge tank with an expensive filter, and they don’t need to be fed expensive foods.
The betta requires a small container (bowl or jar), likes to be fed once or twice a day and likes the water to be changed every four or five days, and that’s what makes it such a good beginner’s fish.

Betta combats were once the subject of many a wager, especially in the fish's native land of Thailand although the practice has waned much in recent years.
Wild bettas are commonly found in the rice fields in Thailand which are flooded with water.
Bettas are able to survive in such adverse oxygen-starved conditions because of a unique organ which they possess, known as the labrinyth organ.

To complement the many colour strains of Betta splendens, there are also around 12 recognised variations of caudal (tail) fin forms.

Betta simplex can reach lengths of 5 cm, and are mouthbrooders who are currently endangered and are therefore listed on the red list of the IUCN.
Betta simplex live in alkaline and very hard water, and is therefore relatively tolerant of hard and basic tap water.
Since this betta lives all year round in harder water around 8-12 KH, it is not only tolerant against hard and cool water, but needs it to be healthy and reproduce readily.

Bettas, or Siamese Fighting Fish, are small colorful fish native to rice paddies and other shallow waters of Thailand (hence the name "Siamese").
Although bettas are popular among hobbyists and breeders because of their striking colors and fins, the domestic betta usually leads a lonely existence.
Bettas can in fact be kept in larger aquariums with other fish, provided that there is only one Betta male or enough space and hiding places for them to completely avoid one another.
