February 16, 2006; Bettie Wilson, the daughter of freed slaves who was one of the three oldest people in America, died Monday at her home in New Albany, MS, of complications from congestive heart failure, according to her Great-granddaughter Della Shorter.
Born Bettie Rutherford, September 13, 1890, in Benton County, MS, she was the youngest of nine siblings.
Wilson, born to freed slaves on September 13, 1890, was the widow of a Pentecostal preacher and mother of 96-year-old Willie Rogers of New Albany.

O'Quin said that at one point Wilson's house was in a state of disrepair and that the community came together and gathered the resources for her to move into a new house last April.
O'Quin said that in order to live as long as Wilson, who at her death was listed as the second-oldest person in the United States and fourth-oldest person in the world, a good genetic physical constitution is necessary.

When Bolden was first recognized by Guinness, she replaced Bettie (Rutherford) Wilson, born Sept. 13, 1890, who had officially became the oldest living American on the death of Emma Verona Johnston on Dec. 1, 2004.
Wilson lost the title when the age of Bolden was verified as being four weeks older than hers in April 2005.
Wilson is the oldest resident ever of Mississippi and has a son, Willie, born Oct. 27, 1909 - making him 95 today.
