Bettles is located 35 miles north of the Arctic Circle in one of last true pristine wilderness areas in the world.
Bettles is known as the "jumping off" point for adventures into the Brooks Range, Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve, Noatak National Preserve, and Kobuk Valley National Park.
The average temperature during the period from Dec through March is minus 5 degrees F. Bettles is located in the center of the Auroral Zone that crosses Alaska and with an average of only 10 cloudy days a month, offers an excellent opportunity to view the Northern Lights.

Totals of 898 sediment and 910 water samples were collected from 918 locations in the Bettles quadrangle as part of the LASL Bettles Quadrangle NURE Hydrogeochemical and Stream Sediment Reconnaissance (HSSR) study.
LASL sent the 910 water samples from the Bettles quadrangle to the Oak Ridge Gaseous Diffusion Plant (ORGDP) for analysis.
These samples were sent to LASL for analysis and the results were released by Bendix Field Engineering Corporation of Grand Junction, Colorado and the U.S. Bureau of Mines in the GJBX-178(81) report.

(Probably from old Bettles village on map to Bettles Airport, see map.) An additional elevation change of 22' down was reported in 1968, but with no corresponding horizontal change - suspicious.
