PBS - Who Cares: Chronic Illness in America -- Betty Garrett
Betty Garrett's first Alzheimer's symptoms appeared when she was 59, in 1989, while she and her husband James were on a cruise.
Two of Betty's sisters had had Alzheimer's, "and she was pretty sure that she was going to get it," says James.
As is often the case with Alzheimer's, as Betty's sickness worsened, the strain on her family increased.

Betty is the same with everyone...weather they are her family or her friends or her co-workers or her fans.
I love Betty Garrett as a performer having found her to be the funniest character on Laverne and Shirley when I was little.
Betty has my eternal admiration for all that she is and all she has done with her life; for the mother she is to her two sons and for the ache she holds in her heart for her husband of 30 years.

Betty Garrett - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Betty Garrett (born May 23, 1919 in Saint Joseph, Missouri) is an American actress and dancer who belonged to the golden era of the movie musical.
However, she is probably best known for a pair of roles in two prominent 1970s sitcoms.
Betty Garrett trained at New York's Neighborhood Playhouse and, undecided between drama and dance, tried both, acting with Orson Welles' famed Mercury Theatre and performing with Martha Graham's dance company.

 Betty Garrett - Classic Film
A long time coming, and greatly deserved, she was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in May, 2003, on her 84th birthday.
Betty Garrett's promising acting career was interrupted by the infamous "Blacklist" of the 1950's.
She did revive her career in the 1970's by her regular performances on television sitcoms as Irene Lorenzo on "All in the Family" and as Edna Babish on "Laverne and Shirley".

("Betty Lou, I think we'll walk home tonight.") I never heard him mention the empty pint bottles of that era's equivalent of Thunderbird wine in the quilts on his bed, nor how I put them back in place when he asked me to "make" his bed.

dOc DVD Review: My Sister Eileen (1955)
Hollywood also gave Garrett a raw deal, indirectly fllisting her after her husband, Larry Parks (The Jolson Story), admitted to the House Un-American Activities Committee a former affiliation with the Communist party.
Garrett's considerable career momentum, built from key roles in On the Town and Take Me Out to the Ball Game, screeched to a halt, and she was off the screen for six years.
Garrett would eventually find a niche on TV's All in the Family and Laverne and Shirley, but at the very least, this minor musical, for all its flaws, shows us the type of career this fine actress could have—and should have—enjoyed.

 Barnes & Noble.com - Biography
As a teenager, American performer Betty Garrett won a scholarship to New York's Neighborhood Playhouse, and in 1938 she debuted onstage in the Mercury Theater production of Danton's Death.
Garrett took two years off to give birth to two children; meanwhile, her husband, actor Larry Parks, admitted to the House Un-American Activities Committee that he had been a Communist.
This ruined Garrett's screen career for several years, during which she and Parks appeared in a nightclub act and toured the U.S. with a play.
