  Betty Wright
In her view, Betty Wright never made such a conscious decision regarding the lifelong activities for which she has been honored many times, not only locally, but at national and international levels.
To Betty, her "thing" has always been nothing more than a natural extension of who she is and as important to the integrity of her life as any of the basic human needs.
The lesson was a disaster that left Betty terrified of swimming and in the hospital recovering from the pneumonia she contracted after inhaling Sutro Bath water.

Live became best known for its version of "Tonight Is the Night," a moving account of a young woman losing her virginity to her first true love.
But the gritty Miami soulster is equally expressive on Leon Russell's "A Song for You" and versions of her hits "Where Is the Love" and "Clean Up Woman" (which is performed as the main song in an 11-minute medley).
Even if the title Betty Wright Live is an example of false advertising, this is a recording that fans of gritty, emotionally direct Southern soul would do well to experience.

Betty Wright - Biography - AOL Music
Singer Betty Wright proved to be a consistently strong presence on the Miami music scene, primarily throughout the '70s and '80s, although she continues to record.
By the age of 13, Wright had begun appearing on other artists' recordings as a backup singer and two years later was issuing her own solo singles (scoring a Top 40 hit the same year with "Girls Can't Do What the Guys Do") and albums (My First Time Around).
It would be several years, however, before Wright would enjoy her next substantial hit, but it would prove to be worth the wait when 1972's "Clean Up Woman" (notable for its prominent guitar riff and Wright's swaggering lead vocal) peaked at number two on the R&B and number six on the pop charts.

Although Honey Cone (which lead singer Wright formed in 1969) was based in Los Angeles, their recordings were Northern-style soul -- specifically, Detroit soul.

Stewart does a wonderful job of voicing Christina, a lonely girl forced to spend some time with her grumpy Uncle Ralph in an isolated mansion, and bringing gruff yet vulnerable Uncle Ralph to life.
As Christina joins forces with her crusty uncle, Wright adds surprising poignancy to the family dynamics.
And by introducing an ill-tempered small town newspaper editor who thinks women should not pursue careers, Wright adds a welcome commentary about sexism, helping Christina realize that she must defy traditional gender roles and embrace her inner girl-power.
