Betuwe - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Betuwe is an area in the Netherlands in the province of Gelderland.
When the Pannerdens Kanaal was dug between 1701 and 1709, the easternmost tip of the Betuwe (including the towns of Pannerden and Lobith) was cut off from the rest of the region.
The Betuwe region is divided into 8 municipalities: Overbetuwe, Neder-Betuwe, Tiel, Culemborg, Neerijnen, Geldermalsen, Lingewaal and Buren.

CE - Reports: The Betuwe rail link and the environment: a comparison of three transport modes in 2010   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Construction of the Betuwe rail link, in the Netherlands, is justified in terms of three arguments: transport-economic, strategic and environmental.
If the Betuwe link were 100% 'clean' in terms of emissions, it would lead to a reduction of a little over 1% in the overall CO2 and NOx emissions of freight transport in the Netherlands.
We thus conclude that construction of the Betuwe rail link cannot be justified on environmental grounds, as the impact of the scheduled modal shift from road to rail is only marginal.
