Dragons (Pern) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Dragons of Pern are a fictional race created by Anne McCaffrey as an integral part of the science fiction world depicted in her Dragonriders of Pern novels.
They are described as having forked tail ends with a defecation opening between the forks; however, most artistic renderings depict their tails as having spade-shaped tips.
Due to the intense psychic bond between rider and dragon, dragonriders are overcome by the powerful emotions and sensations associated with mating flights.

Dragonriders of Pern - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dragonriders of Pern is an extensive fantasy/science-fiction series of novels and short stories primarily written by Anne McCaffrey.
Pern is a pre-industrial society with lords, holds, harpers, and dragons, with the occasional appearance of higher technology (for example, flamethrowers, the telegraph, chemical fertilizers, and powerful microscopes and telescopes).
The social structure on Pern is strictly divided between Hold, Hall and Weyr--broadly comparable to the medieval triune of Nobility, Guild and Church (in that order)--and is considered by the Pernese themselves to be an ideal organization specifically meant to avoid the violence and excess of their Terran ancestors.

Pern is the planet featured in the Dragonriders of Pern series of science fiction novels written by author Anne McCaffrey.
When humans first landed on Pern to colonize it and discovered the dangers of Thread, they bio-engineered dragons to combat it and trained people to work with the dragons.
This is due in part to periodic plagues, which hamper the spread of knowledge, and to the scarcity of metal ore on Pern.

The original resentment smoldering between the dragonmen and the rest of Pern’s inhabitants was only temporarily eased by the need for everyone to work together during the frantic first days of Thread’s return.
Her description of the discovery and impression of fire-lizards, distant relatives to the dragons, is especially intriguing.
Both the dragonriders and the Lord Holders are interested in developing the land from which their ancestors are believed to have originated.

Pern - The planet on which the dragons and their riders live, named by the survey team from the Federation of Sentient (sic) Planets.
More accurately, it is donations made to a Weyr by the Holds and Halls in its territory, to support the Weyr so that the dragonriders can concentrate on fighting Thread and caring for their dragons, instead of having to work at other jobs to support themselves.

DragonRiders: Chronicles of Pern opens with the recent death of Nalaya, The Weyrwoman of Fort Weyr, who is bonded to the Gold Dragon, Morath.
After you have gathered together the DragonRiders of Fort Weyr and attended a meeting, you are bid to travel the land and find ten candidates to be presented to the Gold Dragon as it hatches.
DragonRiders is very much a mixture of genres, perhaps with the emphasis on adventure although it is so story and conversation driven (rather than puzzle driven) it slips beyond adventuring and moves into the realms of an interactive story book.

The Dragonrider series filled a space that only it could, these works I credit with maintaining my sanity through this Age of Madness when I could have lost sight of who I was.
In terms of the start of the chronology of the PERN saga this is in the middle, but in terms of when it was written, this was the start of something big.

The technology level of Pern in the Ninth Pass is figured to be approximately late 1700's to early 1800's, so the value of the Mark in this work has been figured on the value of what the dollar was then.

Pern is a very low-tech, agrarian world; there is no industry, no complex machinery, not even electricity.
The bond between dragon and rider is so close, that if the rider dies, the dragon goes between permanently, killing itself.
We have not built Pern in its entirety, because we lack the players to populate such a large virtual space, and we also feel that a smaller environment leads to more roleplay and better interaction among players.

For generations, the dragonriders had dedicated their lives to fighting Thread, the dreaded spores that periodically rained from the sky to ravage the land.
Now, centuries later, as the dragonriders of Pern were preparing to complete the momentous task of ridding their world of Thread forever, T'lion, a young bronze rider, and his friend Readis, son of the Lord Holder of Paradise River Hold, made contact with the legendary "shipfish".

Between Jaxom and Ruth there was an aura of innocence and vulnerability, of dependence and protection of each for the other.

Your character is a dragonrider in one of the eight Weyrs, going through major changes.
As to your question, most riders traditionally carry a belt knife; these range in length and, though typically ornamental in purpose, are used for protection or, in extreme cases, to settle quarrels.
Note: Dragonriders, as a general rule, never fight if one rider may be mortally wounded; when a rider dies, the dragon goes between never to return, and it is unheard of for a dragonrider to actively harm another dragon.
