The NDP candidate Bev Meslo is running a surprisingly strong campaign and while one can only read so much into a poll of 300 people she's at least around 15-20% and at the most 30-35%.
Although Bev was very strong, I do not expect her to win here, too bad she did not try in a potentially winnable riding, if the NDP would have put her in Kingsway she'd won it for the NDP hands down.
Bev Meslo is the standard holder for the far left socialist wing of the NDP.

When Bev says "I will be a strong advocate for women, and for all working class and oppressed peoples in seeking a democratic socialist alternative to the environment-killing, exploitative global capitalist system," it sounds to me like she has such a vision.
Meslo is of a group that I don't think (depending on what is exactly meant by "fighting for" various groups) has transitioned to the modern reality of social activism.

Meslo said she hoped the mourning would send a message to the BC Liberals that the women's centres that are able to survive this round of cuts must be supported in the future.
She said BC women's groups have repeatedly lobbied to meet with Campbell and his ministers to discuss the impact of the cuts, but they have not received a response.
Meslo also wants the government to address concerns about the treatment of women in BC that were raised in a report by a coalition of 12 BC women centres.

When I spoke to Bev early in the race I thought she had a lot of potential to liven up the debate and bring an interesting perspective to the race.
While I don't disagree with Vicky that the absence of a female leadership candidate besides Bev is troubling, we do have to realize that having women leaders for the past thirteen years has coincided with a decline of feminist analysis and politics within the party.
So far, Bev is the only candidate who has stated that Canada should withdraw from these "free trade" agreements and negotiate new ones which respect (and in fact, highlight) labour standards, environmental protections, human rights, and participation by farmers, workers, youth and seniors and the poor.

Bev Meslo in person comes off as a slightly less insane version of Deborah Kelly-Hawkes.
Comartin would be my choice for a party leader who would never get elected to the PMs office, but without a doubt Blakie, if he was able to lead the party to victory, would make -- by far IMHO -- the best prime minister out of the bunch that are running.
I've seen Bev Meslo in person and wanted to shrink through the crack in the floor out of vicarious embarassment for a person incapable of feeling that emotion.
