	John Beverly Oke
		Bev Oke, professor of astronomy, emeritus, died of heart failure on Tuesday, March 2, at his home in Victoria, British Columbia, just 21 days short of his 76th birthday.
		The first instrument Oke built after joining the Caltech faculty was a single-channel scanner for the 200-inch that could measure the spectra of stars and galaxies in successive 10-nanometer-wide segments, according to Wallace Sargent, the Bowen Professor of Astronomy, writing in the April 1 issue of Nature.
		Oke observed the star with his photometer and found a spectral line in the invisible infrared region, which confirmed that the light from 3C273 had a very high redshift, and must have been moving away from the earth at one-sixth the speed of light.

		The efficiency for the spectroscopic mode of the LRIS under the most favorable circumstances (coincidence of the wavelength of the grating blaze and of maximum quantum efficiency of the LRIS detector) predicted in writing by Bev Oke prior to completion of the instrument was 38%.
		The LRIS Manual of Operations (Oke 1993) gives detailed estimates made prior to completion of the instrument of the transmission or reflectivity of the various optical elements in LRIS (including the CCD quantum efficiency as a function of wavelength).
		The maximum predicted efficiency for the spectroscopic mode, which occurs when the wavelength of the peak of the CCD quantum efficiency curve coincides with that of the grating blaze, is 38%.

	Quasar 3C273 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		The radio source was quickly associated with an optical counterpart, an unresolved stellar object.
		In 1963, Maarten Schmidt and Bev Oke published a pair of papers in Nature reporting that 3C273 has a substantial redshift, placing it several billion light years away.
		Prior to the discovery of 3C273, several other radio sources had been associated with optical counterparts, the first being 3C48.

	Caltech Astronomy : Judy Cohen's Research Interests
		Judy Cohen is poised to start getting lots of photons out of the Low Resolution Imaging Spectrograph, one of the three first light instruments now installed and working on the Keck telescope on Mauna Kea in Hawaii.
		Bev Oke, now retired, and Judy designed and built the spectrograph over the past 5 years, and she, with the help of a talented team of engineers, is trying to tune it up to its optimum potential.
		This should be finished by early 1995, and then its time to cash in on some extremely exciting science that only LRIS on the Keck telescope can accomplish.

		Bev Oke and Maarten Schmidt (1963; AJ 68, 288) noted the existence of "an adjacent thin wisp or jet".
		The radio jet is perfectly aligned with the optical one indicating they're made by the same process.
		First noted by Bev Oke and Maarten Schmidt in 1963, the optical jet can be imaged with deep exposures by large amateur telescopes.

		Their recommendation was for an impartial expert review team to examine the Gemini project team's design and management strategy, along with the budget estimates, to provide the project director with advice on areas where technical improvements or cost savings were possible.
		That expert team, consisting of Alec Boksenberg (UK), Bev Oke (Canada), and Fred Chaffee (US), met in Tucson during the week of 13 July.

	Report from the HIA Advisory Board
		The Board was very impressed by the quality of the exhibits, staff, and building and felt that this was a very worthwhile endeavor for HIA and NRC to pursue and one which addresses part of the need for outreach articulated in the LRP.
		A number of HIA current and former staff have put a lot of effort into helping design the exhibits, with Bev Oke deserving special mention for his leadership here.
		The construction funding for the new visitor centre is one example of how NRC management has been helping HIA over the last few years.

		After a while Jesse got his observations on 3C48 [the first discovered radio star], and in 10 or 15 minutes, we succeeded in finding that it had a redshift of 37 percent.
		We made so much noise in discussing the consequences that Bev Oke came in to find out what was happening.
		We tried to find alternative explanations that would not require a redshift at all, but we failed.

		It allows cutting with one pass at a fairly high speed with little binding of the cutter.
