Spira (Final Fantasy X) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bevelle, on the other hand, had poured all of its resources into building highly advanced military machina, and hence, Zanarkand stood no chance.
Yevon, the ruler of Zanarkand, could not bear to lose his city, and in an act of desperation, gathered his people on the summit of Mount Gagazet and took the souls from all the remaining summoners and other citizens and transformed them into Fayth for a summoning.
In order to further punish Bevelle and to honour the memory of her father, she created the technique known as the Final Summoning, in which a person with a very close bond to a summoner gives up his or her soul to become a Fayth for the summoning.

During the events of Final Fantasy X, the fayth of the aeon Bahamut (housed in Bevelle) serves as the chosen representative of the fayth as a collective.
Bevelle believed Sin to be an aeon summoned by Yevon as revenge for conquering Zanarkand's defenders.
Of course, the Yevon clergy of Bevelle forbade it.

Bevelle (now a holy city) excommunicated the crimson blades but this only increased their popularity so Yevon allowed them back in and renamed them the Crusaders.

Bevelle and Zanarkand were having a huge war 1000 years prior to FFX.
The banning of machina was something Bevelle did as they slowly built up their religion of Yevon, which was based completely on lies about the origin of Sin.
Bevelle covered up what Sin was really all about, worshipping Yevon as a God and declaring Sin a punishment for relience on Machina.
