Beverwyck   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Beverwyck is the popular and mythical name given to the community of fur traders that first emerged along the river to the north of Fort Orange during the 1640s.
During the 1650s, Beverwyck couples began to raise large families that would give the growing settlement its cultural character for much of the next century.
In 1664, New Netherland fell to the English and Beverwyck was renamed "Albany." The Beverwyck court was continued as the court of Albany, Rensselaerswyck, and Schenectady.

From "The Hudson" by Carl Carmer Copyright 1939 renewed 1967 by Carl Cramer BACK ISBN: 0-03-089387-9 The Regeneration of Jochem'Wessels It is possible that the honorable judges of the West India Company's new court would not have accepted their appointments so complacently had they known what difficulties were in store for them.
And since nearly the whole of the social history of the Beverwyck settlement is to be found in the story the court records tell of the life of Jochem Wessels and his wife, it deserves relating.
That made Gertrude Wessels so angry that she shouted "abusive and slanderous words" against the court and was summoned to answer for it at a future session.' The next period of model behavior on the part of' Joehem was much longer.

Historic research revealed that the complex, known as the Beverwyck Plantation, and its inhabitants were quite active in regional socio-political arenas during the Revolutionary War.
Because it soon became apparent that the site possessed considerable potential for yielding information regarding mid-eighteenth to early nineteenth century "plantation" lifeways of northern New Jersey, the initial salvage data recovery excavations were halted and subsequent evaluation and inventory studies (Phase II studies) were performed on the archaeological deposits housed at the site.
The results of these Phase II studies indicated that the Beverwyck Site was eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places and that full scale data recovery effort should be conducted on 28-MR-256.

A History of the Schenectady Patent in the Dutch and English Times 5: Introduction   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
The population of Beverwyck at this early period cannot be exactly known; that it was small may by justly inferred from several facts.
This was followed a few days after (June 26), by an inundation much greater than the first, which forced the inhabitants to quit their dwellings and fly with their cattle for safety to the woods on the adjoining hills.
The year passed away without any adjustment of these difficulties; neither partition nor patents for the land could be had; the people felt aggrieved that the privileges of trade should be accorded to Beverwyck and not to Schenectady, but they preferred to risk their cause to the mollifying power of time.
