 Beyond the Sea
In fact, the script for “Beyond the Sea,” credited to Lewis Colick, although others are known to have worked on it, certainly Spacey himself, is largely like other biopics.
This is largely because the lives of showbiz celebrities often describe similar arcs—the childhood years, the years of struggle, of climbing to the top, the discovery that the top isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, the troubled romantic relations, the decline, the recovery.
But as entertaining as “Beyond the Sea” often is, it’s hard not to feel that, well, I hope Kevin Spacey has got that out of his system.

 "Beyond the Sea" - Salon
The life story of Bobby Darin, as Kevin Spacey tells it in his fetishistic biopic "Beyond the Sea," which he wrote, directed and drove into the ground (he also happens to star in it), has a curious trajectory.
Darin was born in the Bronx in 1936, a sickly child with a show-tune belter of a mother (Brenda Blethyn) who sure could play the pianner.
"Beyond the Sea" is the vanity project he has been hoping to make for years, and in principle at least, it wasn't necessarily a bad idea.

 Beyond the Sea
“Beyond The Sea” is oozing with showmanship, emerging as a spectacle that is far more interesting in form than actual substance.
Unlike other biopics this season, such as “Ray,” “The Aviator,” or “Kinsey,” “Beyond the Sea’s” self-awareness is to its benefit, allowing the characters to be reflective in a way that most films could never attempt.
It is not wrong for the film to spend time here, but suddenly the energy, life and showmanship that has brought “Sea” this far disappears, and we’re left with a series of emotional peaks that amount to four or five climaxes.

Beyond the Sea - Movie Review (Bobby Darin Biopic)
Kevin Spacey is a hugely talented man. Not only is he one of the finest actors of his generation, but he's also proven himself to be a more than capable director and, if 'Beyond the Sea' is anything to go by, he's not half-bad at singing either.
The point is that I just don't think his story was eventful or different enough to merit this film being made and, for all his ability and enthusiasm, Spacey fails to convince me otherwise.
