Bezalel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Apparently it means "in the shadow [protection] of El." Bezalel is described in the genealogical lists as the son of Uri (Exodus 31:1), the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah (I Chronicles 2:18, 19, 20, 50).
Bezalel sagely suggested to him that men usually build the house first and afterward provide the furnishings; but that, inasmuch as Moses had ordered the Tabernacle to be built last, there was probably some mistake and God's command must have run differently.
Bezalel possessed such great wisdom that he could combine those letters of the alphabet with which heaven and earth were created; this being the meaning of the statement (Exodus 31:3): "I have filled him.

As Nachmanides adds to Rashi's explanation, not only did Bezalel possess artistic talent and skill far beyond that which one would expect of someone in his position, but he also maintained a full appreciation of the task with which he was charged.
Bezalel, with the spirit of God in him, embodied the intention that the Mishkan was not just to be a highly elaborate tent in the centre of the Israelite camp, but was to be the virtual house of God amongst the people.

Antique Bezalel carpets were produced in the earlier twentieth century as part of a new art school for Jewish immigrants in what was then British-ruled Palestine.
Founded by Boris Schatz from Bulgaria in conjunction with Zionist pioneer Theodore Herzl, the school and its workshop in Jerusalem were intended to provide an artistic outlet for Jewish artists, and to encourage them to fuse their European traditions with those of their oriental homeland.
True to this inspiration, the Bezalel rug workshop drew upon a wide range of Oriental rug designs, while often exploring folk art traditions from the west as well, but always adhering to a high artistic and technical standard.

Amid Bezalel’s growing popularity here at home, the National Federation of Temple Sisterhoods even went so far as to pass a resolution calling on its constituents to introduce at least one Bezalel object into their homes and temples, and to contribute annually to the school’s upkeep.
With its broad-based appeal, Bezalel left its mark on an earlier generation of American Jews, helping to fill their armoires with Jewish objects that spoke of both modernity and of tradition, of artistic expression and the imperatives of community.
