The Bf 109 was the standard fighter of the Luftwaffe during much of World War Two, although it began to be partially replaced by the Focke-Wulf Fw-190 from 1942.
The Bf 109 was also produced in greater quantities than any other Axis aircraft of the war and is the most produced fighter aircraft in history, with over 31,000 units built.
Bf 109 was the official Reichsluftfahrtministerium (the German Air Ministry) designation, since the design was sent in by the Bayerische Flugzeugwerke company.

Messerschmitt Bf 109 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Messerschmitt Bf 109 was a World War II fighter aircraft designed by Willy Messerschmitt in the early 1930s, the first truly modern fighter of the era combining the features of all-metal monocoque construction, a closed canopy and a retractable landing gear.
The Bf 109 was the standard fighter of the Luftwaffe from just before the start of the war, and spent the first half of the war locked in combat with the Supermarine Spitfire.
This Bf 109B-2 was the first Bf 109 to see combat: 24 of them were assigned to Legion Condor in Spain and demonstrated the armament was still inadequate, so the Bf 109 V8 was constructed to test the fitting of two more machine guns in the wings.

The Bf 109 E-0 was identical to the V-14 except for the armament, as the E-0 had two additional MG 17 in the wings instead of the MG FF in the propeller shaft.
The first Bf 109 F planes were not well tested, and so some planes crashed or nearly crashed, due to vibrations which caused either the wing surface to curve or break, or caused the stabilizer to break away.

In order to address this, the Bf 109 included advanced high-lift devices on the wings, including automatically opening (A thin strip (wood or metal)) slats on the leading edge, and fairly large camber-changing (A movable airfoil that is part of an aircraft wing; used to increase lift or drag) flaps on the trailing edge.
Instead of this, the Bf 109 V4 was constructed, carrying a third (Click link for more info and facts about MG 17) MG 17, mounted behind the engine, firing through the propeller axis.

It was proposed that the Bf 109 B would carry three MG 17 machine guns, two in the top cowling and synchronized to fire through the airscrew, and the other firing through the airscrew boss.
Led by Major Seidemann the three Bf 109 B won the contest for a circuit of the Alps by military aeroplanes, covering the distance of 367 km (228 miles) from Duebendorf to Bellinzona landing in Thun and Bellinzona in 57 minutes 7 seconds at an average speed of 387 km/h (233.5 mph).
The Bf 109 V8 was fitted with two wing-mounted MG 17 machine guns in addition to the two mounted in the engine cowling, although this aggraved the flutter problem until the ailerons were balanced and the wing leading edge stiffened.

Pilots of the Bf 109G found it increasingly difficult to fly against more capable aircraft such as the P-51D "Mustang." Despite its limitations, the G series was the most numerous of the Bf 109 types and remained in production into 1945.

 Bf 109
The Bf 109s main enemy in the early days of the war was aircraft of the RAF, and here it is amusing to note that the first engine for the prototype Bf 109 was a Rolls Royce Kestrel engine of 700hp.
More newer designes of the Bf 109 came out and were produced in prodigious numbers, but this failed to stop the gradual dominance the new Allied fighters were bringing.
Largly the reason for this failure of the Bf 109 to keep pace with its Allie competitors was not the aircraft itself, rather the pilots that flew it.

Early Messerschmitt Bf 109 Review by Brett Green (Classic Airframes 1/48)

There is also a photo of this aircraft on a web page, "The Bf 109 in Spain" http://www.zi.ku.dk/personal/drnash/model/spain/bf109.html, which displays all the characteristics of either the Bf 109 V4 (which was the B model prototype), or an early production machine.
