  Messerschmitt Bf 110 - Germany
Rather than protecting the bombers under escort, the Bf 110C formations usually found that they were hard put to defend themselves, and the farcical situation developed in which single-seat Bf 109E fighters were having to afford protection to the escort fighters.
The last version, the Bf 110G, was intended for use originally as a fighter-bomber but, in view of the success of the F-4 and the increasingly heavy attacks on Germany by Allied bombers, was employed mostly as a night fighter.
It was in a Bf 110 that Rudolf Hess, Deputy Fuhrer of Germany, flew solo to Scotland on the night of May 10,1941, in the hope of negotiating peace terms with Britain, without Hitler's knowledge.

The BF 110 was classified by Germany as a fighter-bomber, though it fit the bill as the latter mostly.
The BF 110 was piloted by two individuals, one working the plane controls itself, whilst the other manning the rear-facing gun turret.
The BF 110 was capable of carrying two external bombs on pylons between the engine and fuselage area.

 Messerschmitt Bf 110 G-4 Nightfighter
This Messerschmitt Bf 110D-3 of 4./ZG 76 operated from Rashid, Iraq, for short period in May. Aircraft such as this were hurriedly overpainted and marked with Iraqi insignia.
With the failure of the Messerschmitt Me 210 series, and a shortage of Ju 88 airframes, the Luftwaffe was forced to retain the Bf 110 in front-live service primarily as a night-fighter, and in 1942 the Daimler Benz DB 605B-1 engine was installed to produce the Bf 110G series.
A kill was achieved using the new guns within days, and an official version of the modification, with twin 30-mm MK 108 cannon, was installed in the aft cockpit to fire at an angle of 60-70° from the horizontal.

 Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator
The Bf 110 was an aircraft designed for one mission--as a strategic fighter to accompany bombers to and from their targets--that found its greatest success in an entirely different role--as a night fighter.
As the American daylight strategic bombing campaign intensified, the 110 was pressed into service--escorted by high-flying Bf 109s--as a bomber destroyer, lobbing rockets into bomber formations, and riddling stragglers with cannon fire.
Although always vulnerable to fighter opposition, the 110 carried two 20 mm cannon and four light machine guns firing forward, and a single rearward-firing light machine gun, so approaching a 110, even from behind, was risky.

Bf 110D-1/U1 Although the Bf 110D-1/R1 and Bf 110D-1/R2 were considered to be a failure, it made the Germans realise that the Zerstörer was suited for the night-fighter role.
Bf 110G-4/U5 The first type of radar installed in the Bf 110G-4 was the FuG 212 Lichtenstein C-1 equipment to produce the Bf 110G-4/U5 with a single-pole antenna array producing considerably less drag than the four-pole Matratze (mattress) array of the Bf 110F-4.
Bf 110H-4/U8 This version was fitted with a 119 Imp gal (143 US gal, 540 liter) auxiliary tank in place of the radio operator/gunner and provision under the outer wing panels for 2 × 66 or 198 Imp gal (70 or 238 US gal, 300 or 900 liter) drop tanks.

Ironically the BF-110 was pegged as the bomber escort plane of choice at the beginning of the war because of its superior range.
The hard experiences in the Battle of Britian, where 110's proved vulnerable to the nimble single engine fighters of Fighter Command, caused the 110 to be tagged as an inferior design.
The 110 is not completely hopeless, but to be successful with it the pilot should avoid furballs.

Messerschmitt Bf 110 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Even with the tempermental DB 600 engines, the RLM found the Bf 110, while not as manuverable as liked, was quite a bit faster than the RLM original request specified, as well as faster than the then current front line fighter the Bf 109 B-1.
The initial deliveries of the Bf 110 encountered several issues with delivery of the DB 600 motors, and thus BFW was forced to install Junkers Jumo 210B engines which left the Bf 110 seriously underpowered, able to reach a top speed of only 268 mph.
No Bf 110 G-1 existed, as the Bf 110 G-2 became the baseline Bf 110G and was fitted with a large number of Rüstsätze, making the G the most versitile of the Bf 110.

 Messerschmitt Bf 109 - Germany
The Bf 109E was the Luftwaffe's standard single-seat fighter for the first three years of the war and was able to outfight or outrun virtually all opposition.
The fact that the Bf 109 had too limited a range to be fully effective as a bomber escort during this battle persuaded the German authorities to consider the type most useful as a defensive fighter in Europe.
The Bf 109G remained the major version right up to the end of hostilities in May 1945; it is thought that some 35,000 Bf 109s of all versions were produced.

The Bf 110 outlived both its successors (the Me 210 and Me 410) on the production lines, and saw service right to the end of the war.

Modelling the Messerschmitt Bf 110 - by Brett Green
The Messerschmitt Bf 110 was undoubtedly one of the most significant aircraft of World War II.
Despite suffering setbacks in the summer of 1940 at the hands of the RAF, it continued to be used effectively in other theatres and roles until the last days of the war, particularly as a night fighter against RAF Bomber Commands strategic bombing campaign over the Reich.
This title shows you how to correct and convert basic 1/48-scale kits of the Bf 110 into many different variants, using a wide selection of aftermarket detail sets, conversions, accessories and decals for both day and night fighter schemes.

Messerschmitt Bf 110 Zerstorer Fighter/Bomber   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The Bf or Me110 was a heavy, twin-engined fighter, designed as a fighter-bomber, bomber-interceptor, and escort fighter.
Its use as an escort fighter during the Battle of Britain was disastrous because it was not sufficiently manoueverable in a dogfight with a Spitfire or Hurricane.
The typical nightfighter carried two 30 mm and two 20 mm cannons in the nose firing forward, two 20 mm cannons fixed in the rear cockpit firing forwards and upwards at an oblique angle of around 60 degrees and twin 7.9 mm machine guns on a flexible mounting fired rearwards by the gunner.

The Hurricanes, while still somewhat inferior to Messerschmitts Bf 109, are far more capable than the gull-winged PZL fighters flown by the Poles in September 1939, and the pilots finally feel their equipment is on par with their enemy's.
The Bf 109, shot down in a dogfight over Southern England by Sgt. Frantisek, was piloted by Hans Wiggers of JG 51, an ace with 13 victories to his credit.
German escort of about 60 Bf 109s makes the mistake of ignoring the small formation of Hurricanes, and two bombers are brought down before they intervene, another Bf 109 is claimed in the resulting dogfight.

The final two roles saw the Bf 110 return to the role it was originally designed for, which was that of bomber-destroyer.
The Bf 110 was more nimble than the Ju 88, although both aircraft were so weighed down with specialised equipment and radar arrays that they became very vulnerable to RAF Mosquito intruders.

In the end, a compromise was decided in the form of a very sparse mottle of RLM 75 Grey Violet over the 76 fuselage sides.
This was now attached to the mast and a lead-in wire fed into a tiny hole in the fuselage to complete the project.

After flying a number of day and night sorties primarily in the defense of Berlin with Bf 110 aircraft, I did a stint as a test pilot from the late summer of '43 to early '44.
The F without radar was probably the best flying 110, fully acrobatic and in some respects smoother than the Bf 109 where the slats made some racket when wringing the plane out fully.
For day sorties, of course, the Bf 110G-4 was completely inadequate, and we paid with heavy losses which forced the termination of day sorties in early '44.

Modelling the Messerschmitt Bf 110 by Brett Green Review by Steven Eisenman (Osprey Publishing)
After a brief discussion of the history and variants of the Bf 110, Brett builds the Fujimi kit straight from the box with magnificent results (OK, he does use Tamiya figures and Fast Frames).
Here we learn that a mere misplacement of the pitot tube can turn an early Bf 110 G into a late F! As was the case with the Fujimi kit, Brett succinctly describes the steps one can take to turn a mere model into something more, even at an out of the box level.
I wish Brett had expanded his chart showing the basic differences among the actual Bf 110 variants; a little more detail on the differences between the G-2 and G-4 series would have been helpful.

World War II Aircraft - Messerchmitt Bf 110
The Bf 110 was an agile fighter used with success as a fighter-bomber, a scout plane and especially a night fighter.
Conceived in 1934 following a demand of the Luftwaffe wanting to get a strategic fighter with a long range of action, engineers created the Bf 110, a streamlined twin-engined, entirely metallic plane, with three men seated in a long cabin of glass and having its offensive armament entirely forward concentrated.
But the Bf 110 found its specialty in the NachtJagd (Night-Fighter) with the G version even though a few Bf 110D were already used to this very specific task.
