Press coverage at the time trumpeted bhangra as the voice of disaffected Asian youth; there was something in this, though it overplayed the sociological: bhangra did articulate their feelings about pressure from parents to conform to traditional ways while British society placed other demands on them, but it remained entertainment and dance music.
In fact bhangra was important because it enabled Asian youth to express themselves culturally in Britain without opening themselves to charges of acculturalization or betrayal of their Indian blood.
Bhangra has failed to break out of its Indian enclave worldwide; although there are strong bhangra scenes among ‚migr‚ Punjabi populations, it is largely seen as a Punjabi phenomenon even among other ethnic groups from the Indian subcontinent.

Central to bhangra beats, even the dhol has become involved in the appropriation and folklorization of Punjabi traditions in a North American cultural context through developing neocolonial relationships between such mix maestros and Western elements of rock, reggae, hip hop, and jazz, elegantly spiked with quintessential dhol drummings and tabla tappings.
Bhangra becomes recognized as a modern mode of expression linking commonalities of dissimilar cultures through artistic similarities and breaks down any dialectical tensions creating a community of appreciators whether it is a community of college students or Chandigarh farmers.
hebiji’s music is colorful and diverse, reflecting the artistic ingenuity of the bhangra music’s versatility as well as the culture it represents, while allowing him to unite melodic material that perfectly counterbalances the rhythmic backdrop without being separated by linguistic or national boundaries.

In bhangra events at New York nightclubs, women were dressed in typical club clothes (tight top and hip-hugging pants), wearing a bindi, mehndi, and nose ring (traditional Indian decorations) dancing to bhangra using moves adapted from traditional folk dances (Maira 1999: 32).
Therefore bhangra is not just a fusion of Indian and western musics, but it is a hybrid in the full sense of the word, combining musical influences of other diasporic groups (such as reggae, rap and RandB) and the west, along with Indian styles.
Contrasting the overt politics of British bhangra with the apolitical nature of New York bhangra demonstrates that, contrary to the tendencies of hybrid theorists, diasporic culture is not inherently subversive.
