Bhattarakas probably started as the heads of groups of naked monks when maths, monasteries, were built beside temples from about the fifth century CE.
It was thus on the bhattaraka issue that the Digambaras split into two equal sections, the Bisapanthis who are followers of the bhattarakas and the Terapanthis who do not believe in the bhattarakas.

While Bhattaraka Mahendrakirti may not have been the person to discover or rebuild the Kundalpur temple, it does seem that he was responsible for transforming Kundalpur into a major tirtha.
It is possible that Bhattaraka Mahendrakirti was a pupil of this Surendrakirti, who had arrived with his guru but had stayed in Garhakota-Kundalpur area to fill the vacuum created by the decline of the Chanderi bhattarakas.
Further research is needed to identify the predecessor and the successors of Bhattaraka Mahendrakirti with certainty.
