  The significance of 'Vas'
His exhortation to the bhikkus was: "Anajayami, bhikkhave vassane vassam upagantum" (I declare O bhikkus, to observe the 'vas' during the rainy season).
Among them there were bhikkus who had risen to the spiritual eminence of 'sovan' (the first phase of sainthood), of 'sakadagami' (the second phase of sainthood) and 'anagami' (the third phase of sainthood).
Inthis Sutta, the bhikkus are advised to satisfy themselves with whateveris offered by the laity, in the form of food, clothing and shelter, which heshould receive with a token of delight.

With the collapse of the several Sinhala-Buddhist kingdoms that survived into the late feudal age of the 14th and 15th centuries in a large part of the island and the subsequent terrible colonial onslaught, the Sangha was one of the institutions that suffered most.
Today a bhikku painter is a rarity and 'news', a bhikku doctor non-existent except for the very few bhikku ayurvedic healers, while a bhikku teacher is a little more common although never at any senior administrative level except within the Sasana educational institutions themselves.
In that society (and probably the preceding social formations), the bhikkus and yogis and svaamis were the teachers and the scholars.

The development of religion in a country depends on the development of its citizens...Thus, it is suitable that a bhikku engages in activity geared towards the advancement of the citizens without taking into consideration that the activity is political or not, provided that such activity does not contradict the way of life of a Bhukku.
However the increasing politicisation of violence in the period under review, had reduced the space available for non-violent means of engaging in democratic political activity, thus giving rise to several new means of resistance to the dominant political culture of this period.

May 27 marks the birth centenary of the late Venerable Buddhadasa Bhikku, the founder of Suan Mokkh or the Garden of Liberation.
It is not simply that Buddhadasa Bhikku was humble and shunned the idea of celebrity status, but the renunciation of such rituals and idolising stood at the very heart of his teaching.
In one of his most famous books, "Handbook for Humankind", Buddhadasa heavily criticised a major pillar of Thai Buddhism - the making of merit at temples in the hope of bettering one's present life, or improved standing in a perceived future life - as contradictory to the Buddha's teaching.
