The Bhils are incorporated in the tika ceremony, the Rajput accession to the throne whereby the new ruler’s forehead is imprinted by a Bhil with his own blood (Naik, 1956; Unnithan-Kumar, 1997).
The Bhils were also formalized as village watchmen for the Rajputs in exchange for land-use and there was frequent intermarriage between the two groups in a hypergynous flow of women into Rajput chieftain families until orthodox Hinduism enforced strict caste endogamy (Naik, 1956).
