Bhimbetka is one of the oldest sites in the world where petroglyphs have been found.
The rock shelters and caves of Bhimbetka have several interesting paintings and most of the paintings depict the life and times of the people who lived in these caves, including scenes of childbirth, communal dancing and drinking, and religious rites and burials and also the natural environment around them.

So the next morning we drove 55 km from Bhopal on the NH69 and arrived at the Bhimbetka caves in the Raisen district of Madhya Pradesh.
The Bhimbetka caves were discovered in 1958 by an archaeologist from Ujjain who saw the rock formations from a distance while crossing this area by train.
As we drove away from Bhimbetka, having thanked Rai for his guided tour we couldn’t help but feel that these caves were not getting their due recognition as a historical tourist spot.

From 1958 till 1974, Dr Wakankar continued to trace and document the art of Bhimbetka and that of early man. For people like us, the only inhabitant who would have been familiar is our Mahabharatan "Bheem who sat upon these rocks" and imprinted them with his posture as "Bhim-bait-ka".
But more significant is their prowess with twig-brushes that they dipped into gheru, magnesium, charcoal, plant extracts and animal fat for oil to paint their world upon these cave walls.
The drive to Bhimbetka from Bhopal, which should take just 25 minutes, takes up to an hour owing to the awesome conditions of the road.
